If communicating with other people is not your thing then that's okay but FFS don't become a manager.

@xahteiwi Do you mentor managers?

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi No subtext! I don't do subtext, which is probably one reason I've steered away from management.

@jwildeboer That still feels like a win, though? I hope it has an impact.

AA renewal was 50% up on last year. 7 minute call being super friendly, got that reduced to 9% by asking "What's the best deal you can do me today for the same package?"
That's literally paid for my shopping this morning.
Never auto renew, these bastards will have you.

mattb,

@coldclimate This is why I switched to Aviva, because they don't do that shit.

The plane's only half full, and they had to move somebody from the front to the back for weight distribution 😆 Wonder how noisy it will be.

How an industry managed to wilfully discard 20+ years of collective experience in software packaging to come up with these containerised kludges is beyond my understanding.

Eurgh, working on a Heisenbug :(

The test fails because the structs differ, but the diff output in the failure message is empty. If I add additional tests for equality of various parts of the struct before the failure, the test passes 😕

Unfortunately the equality test itself is a rats' nest of golang reflection, so I was really hoping not to have to run it in the debugger 😔

Unpopular opinion: Git submodules sometimes do come in handy.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi Git submodules are way better than the hack you wrote so you didn't have to use git submodules.

Letters from Iwo Jima: the companion film to Flags of our Fathers, it tells the story of the battle for Iwo Jima based on letters written by Japanese soldiers. It's in Japanese with subtitles and no dub. I usually find that annoying, but I quickly forgave it. It's thought provoking, and much better than the first film. Also unlike that film it stays with the battle start to finish. Recommended.

So, did I get this right, pyproject.toml based projects require netifaces to install, so that means we have a dependency on gcc, python-dev and kernel-headers in any container where we pip-install such a project?

(This question brought to you by trying to install such a project in a tox environment running in the Alpine-based Docker-in-Docker container.)

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi If so, you'll want a multi-stage build for the container.

Alastair Reynolds wrote a novel called The Prefect which had an interesting political structure: entities were free to set their own laws without restriction as long as they didn't impinge the right to vote. The central police force's jurisdiction only covered voting. I thought it was an interesting idea: folks can live in whatever hellscape they choose, but they can always choose.

Looking at immunity, election fraud is unique in that it violates the principal on which the immunity is based.

Exiting finishes on both the flat and mountain stages of Flamme Rouge!

First time I've played this. Great game. Simple rules with plenty of room for strategy, and can be played in 30 minutes or so 👌

One of my control plane/storage nodes kept freezing at approx 00:10 every day. Just removed it from the cluster, moved the 2 OSDs it was hosting to a former worker, and reprovisioned the worker as a control plane/storage node. All with no downtime 😅

Sin City is a fantastic movie, although it's so over-the-top stylised I guess if you don't like the style you'd hate it.

Probably marmite, but I loved it.

Weird design decision on all the electronic locks with fingerprint or RFID/NFC I’ve found in the past few days of research: they all put the sensors, batteries and electronics on the outside, so the non-safe side of the door. Why not just put the sensors on the outside and all the rest on the inside, the safer side of the door? This is puzzling to me.

I'm probably going to replace my phone in the next few months. I've had Android phones since they were a thing. I'm considering trying an iPhone, which is a contender now it has USB-C.

My impression of iPhone 15 vs Pixel 8 is that the iPhone would be:

  • Slightly worse hardware
  • A much worse OS
  • Significantly more expensive
  • Better app quality (outside the major ones)
  • Much better accessory ecosystem

If I picked iPhone it would be for the app and accessory ecosystems alone. Is that enough?

Why are so many DVDs from the 90s and 00s such potato quality? Interlaced, shitty encoding quality, often even black borders included in the already limited resolution. I don't understand why they did it.
