I'm probably going to replace my phone in the next few months. I've had Android phones since they were a thing. I'm considering trying an iPhone, which is a contender now it has USB-C.

My impression of iPhone 15 vs Pixel 8 is that the iPhone would be:

  • Slightly worse hardware
  • A much worse OS
  • Significantly more expensive
  • Better app quality (outside the major ones)
  • Much better accessory ecosystem

If I picked iPhone it would be for the app and accessory ecosystems alone. Is that enough?

Why are so many DVDs from the 90s and 00s such potato quality? Interlaced, shitty encoding quality, often even black borders included in the already limited resolution. I don't understand why they did it.

@deshipu While they are both masters of their genre, that genre isn't cake.

@fedibikes_berlin
Berlin cyclists and coffee enthusiasts. I found out about events recently and am wondering if there are enough people interested in joining (and organizing) such a regular event?
Maybe there is already something happening like that I don't know about?

The rough idea is to meet by bicycle in a park and have coffee brewed outdoors and chat. Maybe it can be connected to some shorter ride...

Wait what Americans don't differentiate in pronunciation between "du jour" and "de jure"?

Is it just me who doesn't get The Big Bang Theory? So many people have assumed it should be right up my street, but it's just Friends with different jokes. Even worse, the nerd jokes feel like they're written by somebody whose entire experience of nerds is from the other side of a room. I don't get it at all.

This guy made a camera in Blender. By which I mean you create a 3D scene in blender, then put this camera model in the scene. It has an aperture, working lenses, and a sensor, which is what the Blender camera is looking at. It simulates what the physically modelled camera would see.

It's insane, wildly inefficient, completely pointless, and utterly brilliant all at once.

Using to generate a .container file to generate a .service file to launch a container to execute an app to fail to connect another app launched by Ansible, Podman and Systemd because "localhost" in one container logically refers to the container itself and not the host they are both running on.

Clearly the solution is to add .

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@markstos Kubernetes would replace 2 of those and subsume another, so you would at least have consolidated your complexity. Whether that's a good thing is another discussion 😅

If you look at documentation, issue trackers, or blog posts, how do you prefer the dates of creation and most recent update to be rendered?

(Boosts ok)

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi Context dependent. If it's recent I prefer relative. Once it's more than a few months I prefer absolute.

I guess the questions I'm asking are:

  • Is this fresh
  • What else was going on around that time

Relative is probably always best for the first question: "11 years ago" is more visually distinct from today's date than "12th Dec 2012".

It struggles when you want to add context, though. Beyond a certain point the calendar maths is more than you can do in your head quickly.

Serious question for those of you who still haven't ditched Slack as a primary means of work communication: why? I am sure there must be explanations for this, I just cannot think of any good ones.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi Because the change management required to move the whole of Red Hat to yet another messaging platform is not worth it.

Also, we have a sufficient amount of brain damage that there's a serious risk we'd go back to IRC.

mattb,
@mattb@hachyderm.io avatar

@xahteiwi We only just 'nerted this year. Seriously, most of the company was using IRC until this year, and wishes they still were. We're not 'nerting again any time soon.

Suppose I had a progressive training plan, which I had to take a break from for two weeks because I got sick (not Covid, I add for clarity — else I'd take a longer break). Now I'd want to pick up where I'd left off. So the whole plan now needs to shift by two weeks.

Is there any exercise planning app out there the makes this sort of thing easy?

@xahteiwi For the record I use Xert, who were one of the first movers in this space, although these days there are many other options.
