The first search that failed since bing and DDG went down was “big chungus” I thought IT had gone a bit overboard with the content filtering on my work laptop.

also eSIMs are a mistake for your primary phone number - making your phone number beholden to an app?? bad idea, good for burner/travel numbers though

@decryption How so? I’ve been pretty happy with Apple's implementation including being able to QR scan on non authenticated devices. Main thing is to have a second backup passkey for any important service where it's the only auth method.

    @AlSweigart @ashguy one common downfall to this approach is that when documentation is duplicated it’s more likely to end up outdated. It can still work but there needs to be a cultural buy-in that it is everyone’s responsibility to keep docs up to date and be proactive when they notice outdated docs.

    @decryption Given that it is 100% opt in I don’t really see people's beef. I use warp which has AI-driven autocomplete and it’s honestly great. I think people are tired of AI integrations in general and have written anything new off before even trying.

    My favourite way of discovering new music is to stream my own band’s records and then let autoplay decide what comes next. Plus I get like 1c of my Apple Music Sub back in royalties.

    got a pixel 8a - too cheap not to!

    • RRP is $849

    • JB is running a promo where you get $300 off the 8a if you trade in any smartphone, so I gave them a Samsung Note 10 with a cracked screen for $1, bringing the price down to $548

    • if you make a new JB Hi-Fi perks account you get a $10 off coupon, $538

    • I paid the $538 with a gift card I got at 5% off making my out of pocket cost $511.55

    • plus JB give you a $200 gift card if you buy an 8A during its first 2 weeks of sale, which I'll happily use on more ink for my Epson ET-8550, or a new lens for my camera, making the effective price $311.55 for a brand new phone that has support for 7 years ($45/yr if the battery makes it that long!)

    I love bargains 💸

    After drawing on my iPad screen for years and getting jittery lines, this video and the fact it was my screen protector blew my mind. Is there a screen protector that doesn't do this? And isn't matte, because despite drawing nice those destroy the colors

    @mattdarveniza@mastodon.social avatar

    @christianselig Some time after the iPhone X Apple switched glass on most of their touchscreens to something that is more shatterproof but much easier to scratch. I had my X for 5 years with no scratches, the 14 Pro I have is already super scratched up :/. I'd rather the scratch resistance than being semi-drop-proof

    @daringfireball I mean given how long it has taken windows to get apps to 64-bit (still heaps that aren't to this day), you'd expect emulation to be even more important for Windows than it was for macOS. Apps will be emulated for decades on Windows.

    This is obscene. I don’t care who you claim you’re trying to protect (and I love movies and much or more than anyone), trying to get Congress to enact site blocking is absolutely deplorable. Keep Congress away from regulating what ISPs can serve. This is also why a TikTok ban is such a bad idea. https://www.motionpictures.org/remarks/charles-rivkin-state-of-the-industry-address-at-cinemacon-2024/

    mattdarveniza,
    @mattdarveniza@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl it also has near-zero effectiveness. They DNS-block pirating sites here in Australia and it's had no impact. Everyone who wanted to pirate just learnt how to use a VPN (which they should be using anyway) or alternative DNS providers.

    @taylorlorenz if I lived in a country that allows schools to be shot up frequently I also wouldn’t want my kid’s phone confiscated. Is something being fear-based unreasonable when that fear is well-founded?
