Saw the guys from Wook+ sharing the leaked tracklist from Evolve. What does everyone think?

My only complaint is Mercy. I like a lot of Trey ballads, but this one isn’t my favorite. And he’s got the whole album called Mercy!

Shocked Valdese made the album (spelling changed). That one felt DOA on the Trey Trio tour.

Was hoping some of these newer songs on the current Classic TAB tour would make the cut.

Many people are saying the Jerry Garcia Band is better than the Grateful Dead. More and more people are saying this, and JGB has been getting attention and has been doing very well.

My question is: How can the Grateful Dead be the Greatest American Rock band if they aren’t even the best American Rock Band with Jerry Garcia?

Nobody makes a similar argument about TAB v. phish.

Therefore, once again, I am correct: Phish is the Greatest American Rock band.

✌️ ❤️

@mrcompletely I think it will. Absolutely. The Grateful Dead were an entity, an enterprise, an institution. Phish’s magic is uniquely contained within four specific people.

It’s not about the songs for me, at all. If it is about the songs, you may as well throw revenue into the mix, and then we have to talk about Aerosmith or some other bullshit. It’s about the capability of the band behind them. Phish can do anything. The Grateful Dead are like, 9 different bands.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely I think in the long run, Jerry and Hunter will be keepers of the Great American Songbook, alongside Dylan. But in terms of a “band” as a specific unit, and what a “band” sets out to do when they form, and what Phish has accomplished… if you are a new American rock band, how could you want anything less than what Phish accomplished?

Unfortunately, the consistent loss of band members hurts the GD here. All four members Phish still being alive after 40 years gives them an advantage.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely what Phish does with their deep improv is their most impressive feature.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely I think this take relegates Phish as a footnote/followup GD act and they are so much more.

Has anyone seen a show at the Beacon since the audio upgrade? Not just Trey acoustic. Curious if the “sphere sound system” translates to other venues.

#Phish Sphere #Ranked

Music
N1
<gap>
N2

Loved S1 last night but S2 was pretty up and down. And overall last night just doesn’t have the firepower of N1

Visuals
N2
<big gap>
N1

Ranking the visuals from the couch is akin to ranking restaurant dishes from Instagram photos. Still, seemed like they used the Sphere better last night than N1. Given that these are planned shows, N1 wasn’t a learning experience. So assume N3 will be better than N2 and N4 > N3.

@chopaganda As someone in attendance for Night 1 only, this eases the pain a bit from having training wheels on the visuals.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chopaganda personally hard for me to not want the show that had YEM, WTU?, and Harry Hood, but ultimately I want the jams and N1 had 5 solid ones.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@Nolasox @mrcompletely @chopaganda Agree. that jam in My Friend My Friend was great. If they had really connected in weekapaug and skipped blaze on it would’ve been a home run set. (and if Trey didn’t miss that big run in Fluff)

There is something to the fact that a musical highlight (Tweezer) can be a visual lowlight.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@chris @Nolasox @mrcompletely @chopaganda It’s been a reoccurring thought, for sure.

I also think they believed they could modulate that graphic enough to keep it fresh, but nobody liked it enough in the first place for that to matter.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda Definitely got bored of the cars, but didn’t have a problem with most of the rest of N1… until I saw N2.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chris @Nolasox @chopaganda I honestly think they wanted to see if the Phans could handle it, or if it would be a massive psychedelic freak out. Training wheels… it was still incredible in person. Just a fraction of what they were capable of.

@Nolasox should’ve figured someone had already posted this - I enjoyed the album but this resonated with me.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@chopaganda @aburtch @Nolasox Very good points, and also where I landed. It’s tempting to take Yasmin’s “side”, as I prefer her musical output to Beyonce, but it’s a great pop record from a pop star and pop stars will always smell like capitalism.

Very solid album, and conversations like this only cement it as an important piece of pop-art.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @Nolasox @aburtch I think there is probably some amount of jealousy, but I’m not sure you have to tear down Yasmin’s talent. I think she rightly gets credit as an innovator on the acoustic guitar.

Maybe I just like pretentious horseshit.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chopaganda @aburtch @Nolasox The line “park your Lexus” specifically is just one example of glorifying wealth and status that creates a disconnect from what I turn to music for.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @Nolasox @aburtch Is she responding to backlash from this? Is there published backlash to Yasmin’s piece? Have really only seen it discussed here. Didn’t know she wasn’t handling response well.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @aburtch @Nolasox I meant Yasmin’s response. You had indicated that she “can’t take a few spicy shots”, but I’m not aware of any indication she can’t take the heat for her criticism of Bey.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @Rosey @chopaganda @aburtch @Nolasox As Jeff Holdsworth said, Phish lyrics “bypass the intellect”, whereas everything Beyoncé does is a “statement”.

Lexus and Texas is a pretty irresistible rhyme though, I’ll give it that much.

Tried to passively listen to the new album already this morning and it kept grabbing my attention. Beatles and Dolly, smoke breaks with Willie, genre bending but she’s kind of pissed off about it, Miley Cyrus singing about mortality. There’s a lot going on.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@Rosey Made it to Jolene on the commute to work and really enjoyed it, much more than I expected. I don’t know if this is more engineered to get white people into Beyoncé, or black people into Americana, but overall it’s a powerful force for good, and may become the first Beyoncé album to slip into my regular rotation.

South Park is more responsible for the modern day conservative movement than many would like to admit.

maxellxlii90, to random
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

The Grateful Dead had better songs, but the consistency of the Phish lineup, and the resulting chemistry, (plus Jon Fishman) makes Phish the better “band”.

This is also why Phish cover bands will never be as successful as Grateful Dead cover bands.

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely point remains! there have been transcendent performances of Grateful Dead material regardless of who is on stage. To some extent, the songs are so strong that all members have now been proven replaceable (to a degree, looking at the success of Phil and Friends / Dead & Co., not a judgement on JG.)

maxellxlii90,
@maxellxlii90@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely Appreciate your perspective on the quality of post Garcia dead music. From another angle, even when Jerry was alive, they proved that the keyboards and rhythm section could be altered with similar results. The magic was more about Jerry than the contributions of each individual. Phil / Bobby / Garcia have a palpable and unique chemistry, but that’s not a band.
