Saw the guys from Wook+ sharing the leaked tracklist from Evolve. What does everyone think?

My only complaint is Mercy. I like a lot of Trey ballads, but this one isn’t my favorite. And he’s got the whole album called Mercy!

Shocked Valdese made the album (spelling changed). That one felt DOA on the Trey Trio tour.

Was hoping some of these newer songs on the current Classic TAB tour would make the cut.

@maxellxlii90 hey stranger and lonely trip are the only ones I actually think are good songs, but I'm a notorious hater (just because they jam it doesn't make me like a song). There are a couple I still haven't heard. Worst of them that I have heard is Ether Edge, which is truly dreadful

Many people are saying the Jerry Garcia Band is better than the Grateful Dead. More and more people are saying this, and JGB has been getting attention and has been doing very well.

My question is: How can the Grateful Dead be the Greatest American Rock band if they aren’t even the best American Rock Band with Jerry Garcia?

Nobody makes a similar argument about TAB v. phish.

Therefore, once again, I am correct: Phish is the Greatest American Rock band.

✌️ ❤️

@maxellxlii90 I really don't mean it that way. I feel like Garcia and the dead left a lot of unfinished business, a lot of cards left unplayed, a lot of paths started but left incomplete. But Phish didn't try to pick up anyone else's thing. They did their own thing, and it led them to some of the areas where there was unfinished business, and they carried some of those things forward. Then, critically, Trey passed the test Garcia couldn't and got himself clean. So they've had this extra time.

@maxellxlii90 I don't feel like I'm expressing it very well, but to me this is an important idea. There is an unbroken chain of similarity between them, an underground stream that runs through both: the idea that music can unify and transform in a much more immediate and real way than weak metaphorical platitudes about "the power of music" convey. I thought that died with Garcia and I found that deeply tragic. But it didn't at all. So I could never downplay the band that's made that happen

Has anyone seen a show at the Beacon since the audio upgrade? Not just Trey acoustic. Curious if the “sphere sound system” translates to other venues.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 I've heard the Meyer Sound version they put in the Schnitz here in PDX. It's a moderate improvement to a very difficult acoustic problem. But not really equivalent

The Grateful Dead had better songs, but the consistency of the Phish lineup, and the resulting chemistry, (plus Jon Fishman) makes Phish the better “band”.

This is also why Phish cover bands will never be as successful as Grateful Dead cover bands.

@mrcompletely I agree with you on this, but for me it is more than just Garcia. The Grateful Dead functioned as a democracy. There was a push and pull that anyone on stage could step up and take part in, whether that was a musical dialog or bringing material into the band, etc.

I have certainly heard bits of that in postGD configs, but it always feels like there is a controlled space for it to happen. It is more about nostalgia than it is exploring new territory.

@tonymasiello @maxellxlii90 that's what I was trying to get at in my second paragraph above. I do think there's some truth to the observation that the fact this persisted across lineup changes outside of the core group is meaningful

I try not to do this… but this deserves a place in the fediverse. Ryley Walker and Michael Hurley.

SourceRolls,

@maxellxlii90 @mrcompletely we only tried once (had two matching Sony cd players and two Danyo cd boomboxes) and I practiced the timing a few times. I used the same cd player to sync up Dark Side to Wizard of Oz, truly the peak era for those of us who learned our cd players’ latency times.

Just watch RRR yesterday, and what a great movie. That kind of choreographed action and character building is precisely what is lacking in all the failed blockbuster comic book movies.

Between that and Godzilla Minus One, it’s shockingly clear that American blockbuster cinema is falling behind. We deserve better!

One reason I’m still on X occasionally is because there’s really no presence here, but I’m coming to the realization that King Gizzard twitter is like, a single 18 year old dude with way too much time on his hands posting under several different accounts.

Feels weird that I’m
reluctant to share that I’m listening to Roger Waters.

I’m open to be educated, but I do feel that he’s an example of someone who has been somewhat unfairly marginalized for acknowledgment of humanitarian issues with Palestinian Population.

Many people I respect have conclusively stated that he’s reprehensible, beyond saving. I don’t want to be blind to anti-semitism, but I still don’t see it. Again, open for education. I don’t want to condone hateful rhetoric.

@JoeAce967 @mrcompletely Robert Walters is in his current band… plays with Mike Gordon, obviously. For some reason that gives me confidence the guy is not a complete monster. I really do appreciate his music, and so much of it was profoundly formative.

Hard set aside completely, but I want to be open to valid critique, as he has become so controversial. Crotchety definitely seems valid, but not enough to take away from his music.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@maxellxlii90 @JoeAce967 well... I've been thinking about it more

I think in the modern time frame, with all the various ways he's danced around Putin and been accused of antisemitism, wearing a Nazi style uniform is, to me, an inexcusable choice. I don't really care that it's connected to his past work etc. For me doing that is a shithead move. So my take after consideration is fuck him.

Not really interested in more discussion on it though, and it doesn't change my opinion of his early art
