This “greatest American rock band if it isn’t the Grateful Dead” thing is going around in the old place. Something I think about a lot, but I do feel pretty strongly that it’s .

This says less about Phish as a band than it does of America for primarily producing individual solo acts, rather than celebrating collectives.

Tom Petty AND the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen AND the E Street Band, George Clinton AND Parliament. Sly AND the Family Stone.

@SourceRolls in the discussion, but disqualified (in my head) because it’s still Sly AND the family Stone - which centers the individual instead of the collective.

Still think Taking Heads is fair because they formed and gained popularity in a legendary US music scene.

I really liked the space they were in at the end of The Final Hurrah. I wish they would have stayed there a bit longer before going into Pillow Jets, but it was a nice segue. I was happy to be there for the Phish debut of Pillow Jets. I like that one a lot, and think it could really develop nicely as a jam vehicle for this band.

@chris I like to joke about the lyrics, but was also thinking about how tunes like pillow jets and oblivion would be highlights for me if I was in attendance. The playing is so good that I’m willing to surrender to the flow if it’s keeping the band in an inspired place.

Just no lower case songs!

@mrcompletely @Rosey @chris I ended up spending a decent amount of time with the Lonely Trip album, so the quarantunes like…And Flew Away already get the pass from me. Ether Edge and the Pillow Jet lyrics are extremely hard to take, but I felt the same way about Light in 09.

I’ll always be on team Trey, but sure do miss him stringing words together just because they sound good together. Bring back Reba level lyrics or take out the lyrics completely.

Nit picking phish is half the fun!

Pillow Jets sounds kinda biblical to me, like it’s about angels coming for judgement day reckoning. Just weird imagery all around. Still I’m basically on board until the “harlequin kaleidoscopic…pulsating halcyon specter” part… but then that leads to the conjurers of thunder line which is cool.

I will give Pillow Jets credit for avoiding most of the Trey cliches;

@velvetseawader I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Trey used to sing like he was quietly leading you through the woods to some obscene treasure. It ruled.

Now he’s signing like he’s publicly sharing his location on Threads. It’s way less cool.

@velvetseawader I’d (politely and respectfully) argue that when it “works” it doesn’t really “work” as much as it “doesn’t fail/detract”. I dont think any of that (extremely extra) effort is required to stoke audience engagement, but then again, I’m not the guy on stage.

I imagine he gets an encouraging reaction from the first few rows.

@velvetseawader I agree, I think he’s trying to shore up one of the long standing phish criticisms (bad signing) but it’s definitely not doing him many favors

@Stoneycase @velvetseawader it’s been a few years now, pre-pandemic even, that he’s had that vocal coach. Admittedly I know nothing about signing, but stubbornly believe there’s just no way that straining to hit notes he’s never hit before is helping to protect his voice.

I think he’s just trying to “leave it all on the floor” in every way possible. I appreciate the effort, but it would be way cooler if he leaned further into a more subtle and relaxed vocal delivery.
