Why is it "the dude abides" but "the dudes abide"? Wouldn't it make more sense if it was "the dude abide" (no 's' on either) and "the dudes abides" (both)? It makes no sense.

Richard Feldman recently interviewed me for "Software Unscripted" - I hope you enjoy it. https://pod.link/1602572955/episode/7de37354dfa00eb3308e523467f410aa

@gvwilson Thanks! I'm adding it to my "listen" queue.

I daydream sometimes about finding a job as a dev dev - someone whose main responsibility is to develop developers. I've looked at internal training roles at a couple of companies over the years, but they always seem to be "maintain workshops to teach new hires how to use the latest version of our internal Floggle system" rather than "engage one-to-one to help people identify gaps and aspirations in their tech skills and then teach what you can and talk other devs into teaching the rest."

@gvwilson The "dev dev" role you are talking about is normally called "mentor". Companies (at least the ones I've worked for) DO recognize it's value, but they don't pay for full-time mentors for developers, they ask senior folks to spend time mentoring others. Interestingly, mentors ARE a paid role for a different job family: executives.

I wonder why. I wonder if "paid dev mentor" is a business opportunity. How much would you charge?

@gvwilson You may be right but my own experience is a bit slanted: I've been working [checks the year] over 21 years without switching employers. My current employer strongly encourages senior engineers to mentor less experienced folks within the company, and will sometimes bring in external trainers, but there was only for a brief period when they were willing to pay for external mentoring.

It would be a totally different story if the 81 year old was bad at his job because of his age. In fact, I think his age has been a PLUS in a very complicated time. He's gotten A LOT of things done. I'm not on board with all his choices, but SO FUCKING WHAT. OVERALL, he's done very well. He's a BRIDGE to the future. The future WE HAVE TO CHANGE TOGETHER. So, save the bullshit, juvenile take that someone is only good if they do EVERYTHING YOU think is right in this moment in time.

@StillIRise1963

In my opinion the 81-year-old is doing a pretty impressive job and could, indeed serve as a bridge to the future. I'm not concerned about him. I'm concerned about the 85-year-old serving as President because the 81-year-old didn't choose to serve as a bridge to the future (and also because the Democratic party changed the rules so that the opinion of the majority of the members of the Democratic party won't actually affect the question of who is nominated for President.

I'm not sure quite how I am expected to take that. Did you mean "rest your mind" as in "you need not worry so much about this" (in which case I'd like to know why) or "rest your mind" as in "don't think so much" (which I find mildly offensive)?

The design of women's v. men's pockets: https://pudding.cool/2018/08/pockets/

My daughter inherited a pair of my cargo pants a while ago and spent a good hour yelling HOW DO YOU HAVE SO MANY POCKETS, THIS IS AMAZING, THE POCKETS EVEN HAVE POCKETS IN THEM AND MY HANDS FIT ALL THE WAY INTO THOSE POCKETS

mcherm,
@mcherm@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye The fact that women's clothing has insufficient pocket space is not a new idea... I've been hearing about it occasionally for decades. There have been a few attempts to capitalize on this by producing a line of clothing for women with generous pocket sizes. So why haven't any of those attempts been huge economic successes?

It's not intended as a skeptical question... I genuinely want to know the answer!

RFCs are very good at describing 7 seemingly disparate design choices, without explaining the one thing this set of choices simplifies greatly. And chances are you'll realize this only halfway through your implementation.

@fasterthanlime We all look like idiots from time to time. The best one can hope to achieve is not to remain that way very long.

I'm so tired of teenagers being "the chosen ones" in fiction. please, let a middle-aged woman save the universe! she's seen some shit and dealt with it. she's tired of it all. she doesn't give a fuck. she's angry. she will get this shit done.
