I'm idly waiting for the iPad Mini refresh that's probably not coming, the same way I was waiting for the iPod Touch refresh that never came and the iPod refresh that never came, as is my habit.

The iPad Mini, neglected black sheep of the lineup, is the purest and most honest expression of what an iPad is and what it's for: a small, incredibly portable computer for doing one thing at a time, where rough edges of computation are polished smooth and the interface falls away and disappears.

"When people are treated unfairly, for example, when they are not allowed to have input into decisions that will affect them, or when they are not given good explanations of why certain decisions were made, the symbolic message may be that the organization does not think highly enough of them (to provide input or to be given good explanations)."

@mhoye@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina not gonna lie, it hurts to talk about this stuff. Software has been so totally committed to its own exceptionality for so long that the whole notion of psychological self-awareness and its systemic impacts is an identity threat to the field, even though the inside of our heads is where the raw material of our work comes from. It’s so terrible and we’re so far behind as a field.

Whenever Americans talk about "fighting for freedoms" I remember that one time some dude who got thwarted by his own flopsweat tried to blow up his shoes and twenty years later anyone who goes through an American airport has to shuffle around in their socks hoping their pants don't fall down while they get millimeter-radared for a security pageant and the whole country just rolled over and decided that's totally reasonable.

Several of the major social media platforms - Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter - have effectively declared war on linking to things and I absolutely hate it

"Link in my bio" / "Link in thread" / "Link in first comment"... or increasingly no link at all, just an unsourced screenshot of a page

I just sent a message to Hyundai Canada asking for child safety locks. Not on the rear doors, though. Everyone has that.

I need them on the performance features of the car. I'm going to be teaching two kids how to drive in this thing, and even with the performance options dialed all the way down it will take off like a startled rabbit.

With performance options turned all the way up, this car is just far, far too much car for any novice driver. Damn near every EV is.

Haha, I just looked it up and the new Hyundai Ionic 5N maxes out with more horsepower than the 1994 Maclaren F1. My boring old regular Ioniq 5 is already faster than a Lamborghini Diablo and within a fifth of a second of matching the track speed of a '97 Dodge Viper.

Teenager Me would have wound up a goddamn grease spot.

I'm on here looking for text indexers and everything is 'lightning fast exoscale terafloops that scales to enterprise quantawarbles with polytopplic performanations' and it would be great if this industry could breathe into a bag until it remembers that one person with one computer is a constituency that matters.

If your “open source software” requires a datacenter-scale strata and is optimized for, or maybe only meaningful to, datacenter-scale problems, is not open source in any way that matters. “Free as in corporate risk management” and “free as in labor arbitrage” are not aspirations.

I’ve mentioned Atkinson Hyperlegible before - it’s certainly a personal favourite - but today I’ve discovered Andika, a teaching font designed to ease learning, and Inclusive Sans, designed for accessibility.

https://brailleinstitute.org/freefont

https://software.sil.org/andika/

https://www.oliviaking.com/inclusive-sans

As always, I strongly recommend setting Firefox to use only the fonts you’ve chosen, in the heights you prefer. The combination of only using your chosen fonts and an adblocker is a huge improvement.

This exchange reminds me of the debate I had with Jeff Atwood on whether or not servers should use ECC memory a decade ago. Jeff said no and I disagreed and said yes in https://danluu.com/why-ecc/.

At the time, there was one argument that could've, theoretically, been overturned by progress: Jeff argued that commodity non-ECC memory was becoming more reliable and was highly reliable. This was not true at the time, and it turns out this still isn't true a decade later.

@mhoye@mastodon.social avatar

@danluu one of the biggest things server hardware enjoys is clean power and controlled operating conditions. You’re certainly not wrong about ECC mattering, but consumer-grade hardware running on server-room power in temperature and humidity-controlled rooms runs far more reliably far longer than you’d ever expect, and most house voltage in North America is hardware-stressing noise by comparison.
