Compelling arguments

Birchtree has entered its snarky era.

@matt Dumb question, are the words "Actually" and "Arguing" in the last paragraph supposed to be hyperlinked? I kept tapping on them with my finger (clicking them, too) to no avail.

Good post by @heckj on what he learned and the tradeoffs he did when designing an API for strict swift concurrency support.

The best part are the regrets he has, good guidance for those of us starting on our strict journey:

@titociuro @Migueldeicaza I'm in that transitional area where I learned both GCD and SC, but I can see both sides. There's a nice simplicity to GCD that "just works". At the same time, SC follows up on Swift's explicit philosophies, and I do feel it has its place as a language-wide concurrency solution (I think GCD is Apple-specific, last I checked). So I can't really say one is better than the other, but I can say both opinions are valid.

I’m not here to defend all things Kagi, but those emails from the CEO seem…completely reasonable in my eyes. Vlad sounds pleasant enough and the mastodon post with the emails (sharing private correspondence without consent FWIW) misrepresents what was in those emails (he declined a call in the first email, not any further emails).

Again, I don’t pay for Kagi or think they’re perfect, but it feels like we’ve gone from zero to “Kagi is basically evil” in no time flat. https://mstdn.social/@osnews/112258784828818823

@matt I don’t know about “no time flat”, a lot of this felt pretty gradual to me. The icing on the cake was their dealings with Brave.

This might be a weird recommendation request, but I’m on the hunt for a single player game on Switch or PC that I can play with the sound off and still enjoy. Some light story is fine, but ideally the gameplay is the star of the show.

Any suggestions? :eyebrows:

@matt The Witness or Taiji are pretty good options.

Christmas came early for me last night! The Arc browser is now available on Windows (beta) for all Mac members, which means I get to have the same experience as I did on the Mac, right from my Tiny PC.

Edge was serviceable, but this is what it's all about!

@matt Did you end up seeing the news/release notes about this yesterday?

Game #3 beat this year! Goal is 10 in 2024.

After spending a ton of time beating Tears of the Kingdom, Sayonara Wild Hearts felt almost like cheating, as you can beat it in less than 2 hours.

I didn’t love the first half of the game, but at a certain point it really turns things up a notch and I loved the second half.

@matt I enjoyed playing Sayonara Wild Hearts years ago (one of the first Apple Arcade games I invested myself into)! Sometimes I still listen to the soundtrack.

@matt Interestingly, I've had a fairly decent experience with Arc, and having the iCloud Passwords extension has helped me keep using it. Much so that I wish I had this kind of experience on iPadOS. And I don't care about the engine (though I'd prefer WebKit), the UI and general flow seems to work better for my weird little brain.

I've spent my Saturday bringing my Big O notation knowledge back from the dead.

I hope y’all did something more interesting than that!

I finished Coco Krumme's "Optimal Illusions: The False Promise of Optimization" a couple of days ago, and I really enjoyed the discussion brought up.
