@GossiTheDog I have people in my life I need to consider putting "Lockdown Mode" on their iPhone. Thanks.

In tech, I think your career will come to a stall if you stay at the same place for too long...

@sirber Do not confuse stability with stagnation. - Also, on my own terms, pretty happy regressed back to being more of a code monkey than management type.

Aren't all "enterprise apps" held together by duct tape, tie wraps and glue? Typically lots of quickly written glue code that makes different parts work via forgotten poorly or non documented API's.

I've been using Linode for many many years for hosting > 100 custom Debian/Asterisk VPS's... I'm starting to look for a secondary provider, preferably with good API's for spinning up images and managing basics (power on/off, creation at datacenters from specific images). If you aren't a sales droid, and have a positive recommendation for someplace, I'd love to see/hear it.

Camping. Our neighbors (large family and friends reunion?) last night had such a large fire with lots of starter fluid it set off our fire detector and propane leak detector. It went off again after we closed windows and turned on the AC. Cripes. On the good side, they quiet this morning, sleeping hangover late probably. And we're "wheels up" soon, we will be gone.

@Heterokromia @yogthos Used to be an HP fanboi. No longer. For small office and home use I've been happy with Brother. Home has a cheap B&W laser that just works, Linux and Mac just sees it and it's not picky about cartridges/drums, etc.. but the real OEM ones aren't expensive. - My wife needs nice color prints every now and then, cheaper to just pay the local print shop.

I'm looking for a simple Linux/PHP photo album I can put on a my public website to share some recent trip pictures in full hi-res glory. Last time I did this, I wrote my own (and it sucked, but worked). I did a search, and there is so much kruft and phat crap I don't want to put it on my machine. - worst case, some perl and imagemagick would work. But I'm being lazy.

Took a nap. Wrote code to do what I wanted (not much) for an photo album display on my website in my dreams/sleep. So now I gotta do it, right? Thank dieties for Exif data, if only it were standardized among cameras.

Looking for a sane way for on system startup to delay starting Apache2 for a few minutes. any old crunchy sysadmins got a favorite way? I could add a startup script to crontab.. but is there a better way?

    musicmatze, to php

I am currently thinking about learning new programming language ecosystems and skills.

My current thoughts about - can one earn decent money with nowadays?

What does the php community say? What learning resources should I check out (for those unaware: I am a professional Rust dev and have >10 years experience in programming - no need for a beginner tutorial).

@musicmatze You don't typically make money with PHP itself. It's a tool. What you make money from is helping people with problems AND money solve that problem. Some of those are generic website problems, things that use PHP frameworks, modules, etc.. I've always found the real paying gigs haven't got a care what tools you use, so long as you solve the problem. Go find non-tech people and find what their problems are. Or, you can be another PHP code monkey for hire. Also works.

@arnandegans @musicmatze "Code Monkey" = the low level guy in a "cube farm" writing code to spec for hourly wage. I've been/done all kinds of "trained monkey" jobs. Yeah, maybe that phrase/connotation needs to change as it may not translate well. I apologize if it offends.
