When doing my release anniversary posts (e.g. today's https://mas.to/@miblo/110305069444602425) I try and link to the releases and @ mention the artists. However, it is woefully rare that I can actually find the artists here.

I've wondered before if the Musicians' Union could host a Mastodon instance for their members. But now I wonder, what may it take for, say, Bandcamp to federate? So on a page like https://flyinglotus.bandcamp.com/album/cosmogramma Flying Lotus' name may be an @ handle, mentionable in this post, etc…

Here's a video of a little LED Clock program I've been having a go at making over the last two weekends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTqyY7Xp8dg

There's stuff to improve, but the big revelation for me: I could write text in there without having to learn how to render fonts myself! This may bring other potential projects a lot closer to happening.

Cheers to @revk for the inspiration!

In many languages, the word for "bear" is descriptive because people were superstitious about saying the actual name. Translations:

Welsh: honey-pig

Irish: the good calf

Lithuanian: the licker

Russian: one who leads to honey

Germanic: the brown one

https://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~rwest/wikispeedia/wpcd/wp/b/Bear.htm

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@grammargirl Nice! Susie Dent has done the Modern English etymology of this a bunch of times on Countdown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countdown_(game_show)

That Lithuanian translation "the licker", though! Susie tells it that our expression "to lick into shape" came from a superstition that bears are born as basically a blob that must be literally licked into bear shape by their mum. I never realised (and wonder if she knows) that this is in the Lithuanian word for them…

Today in we have the release anniversaries of two albums and a TV soundtrack to celebrate:

• Venetian Snares' "Songs About My Cats" turns 22: https://venetiansnares.bandcamp.com/album/songs-about-my-cats
• Electrelane's "No Shouts, No Calls" turns 16: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Shouts%2C_No_Calls
• Flying Lotus' "Yasuke" soundtrack turns 2: https://flyinglotus.bandcamp.com/album/yasuke

Tickled that Yasuke is a mere two years old here, it feels older to me.

Happy Anniversary, Aaron, Verity, Mia, Ros & Emma, and Steven!

I mistyped "Wuthering Heights" as "Wuthering Heist" and now I desperately need to read that book/see that movie.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@galaxis @mxtiffanyleigh Same! I was gonna say Kate already wrote this song too as 'There Goes a Tenner'. 🐟

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@mxtiffanyleigh @galaxis Oh, what a sweet introduction to her! And, gosh, if you're up for it, you have treat after treat waiting for you.

(I have favourites, but try and avoid letting them slip because Kate's music, for me, is just the kind we should have the joy of discovering personally, rather than have recommended to us.)

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@galaxis @mxtiffanyleigh Aww… beautiful! That one I do have – it was the 2nd record of hers I got – along with the 12″ single of 'Don't Give Up'. My very first Kate record, though, was the 'Running Up That Hill' 7″ with 'Under the Ivy' on the B-side, that I reckon I got more-or-less purely based on the cover!

Here's my lot: https://www.discogs.com/user/Miblo/collection?sort=added%2Casc&folder=193547&limit=25&search=Kate+Bush

Today in we have the release anniversaries (one Crystal) of two utterly glorious albums:

• Amália Rodrigues's "Cantigas numa Língua Antiga" turns 44: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantigas_numa_L%C3%ADngua_Antiga
• Portishead's "Third" turns 15 (Crystal): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_(Portishead_album)

Now, I tend to avoid linking to YouTube, but since Amália's album is so criminally tough to find (that Wikipedia article was written by me) and must be heard, it's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmgEDmvoZl4&list=OLAK5uy_mfmBsOqb_VQKV9pCrdAMoJvz18UBsBhBQ

Happy Anniversary, Amália (RIP) and Portishead!

miblo,

@lritter "The Diplomat", right? (I haven't yet seen either, but imagine the current No. 1 on Netflix may be the one…)

Today in we have a duo of album release jubilee anniversaries to celebrate:

• PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me" turns 30 (Pearl): https://pjharvey.net/music/rid-of-me/
• Autechre's "NTS Session 4", the closing draun quarter of the epic 8-hour "NTS Sessions", turns 5 (Wood): https://autechre.warp.net/format/270707-nts-session-4

Happy Anniversary, Polly, @sean_ae and Rob!

Yo @Walrus, I just came across https://exmailorder.nl/shop/vinyl/rebetika-lp while doing today's album release anniversary post and thought of you!

And this seems to be its original digital release now on Bandcamp: https://unsounds.bandcamp.com/album/rebetika

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Walrus Hehe, yeah, I hear you!

I ended up watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7doKd-AAGqE of them playing this in France. Seems it's mostly Andy playing his guitar into Yannis's computer, who then processes it along with original recordings. At some point, though, Andy plays original cassette recordings himself through his guitar.

So, my takeaway: It's a love letter to those old Rembetika recordings, showing how music can fade from earshot over time and with new tech, and saying: "Preserve the originals".

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Walrus Oooh, I don't think so, no. Just the CDs you sent all those years ago! (Which still to this day I haven't actually managed to tag, other than the first disc from https://musicbrainz.org/release/66606965-d1ec-429c-bd69-d53e5f9ec8ea)

Today in we have the release anniversary of a lopsided, abrasive and cool as hell album to celebrate:

Happy Anniversary, Katrin, Terrie, Andy, Luc & G.W. Sok!

Certain folks are saying that Bluesky’s search capabilities spell potential doom for the Fediverse.

Except Bluesky is only searching on one node. What happens when you add another node? What happens when you add 10,000 nodes for Bluesky to connect with?

Will all nodes that use AT protocol have comparable search?

Will Bluesky’s search even be as good as what’s available on Misskey, Akkoma, Friendica, and some forms of Mastodon?

We don’t know!

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@atomicpoet It kind of sounds like the people you're hearing from just aren't fully on board with the distinction between protocols and implementations / usages.

Maybe a near-enough analogy that most of them would understand and be on board with is "The Internet" vs "Individual Websites". Check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_visited_websites and ask themselves, "Do I think even the #1 ranked site is synonymous with, or the standard for, The Internet?"

revk, to random
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar
miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Well, yeah, this got my imagination going! I was at:

• Seconds move in discrete steps
• Minutes lerp between 3 LEDs
• Hours lerp between 3 numbers' worth of LEDs (so 15)
• LED colours merge, so at 00:00:00 the top LED is white, with the minutes and hours merging accordingly

…and then I focused back on the post to see your update mentioning just what I'd been imagining…

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Ah, interesting! Aww sweet, I'll look forward to the video.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Ah yeah, nice! So, I trust you that other ways look shite, but this really has sparked my imagination such that I fancy trying them out myself (in software). If only to learn / practice a bit of maths and rendering, which I rarely get to do.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Yeah, I reckon this was also my first thought, but it kinda raised the question "would it even sensibly look like it's talking about an intermediate place between two discrete points?"

So I fancy trying them out as basically sliding windows – minutes 3 pixels wide, hours 15 pixels wide – with their centres at full intensity, falling off using Some Function™, mapped to the nearest 3/4 and 15/16 pixels.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Alright, I've managed to make what I had in mind and, you know what, I'm actually into it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu5ixn-vM9E

(I also toggle on a "turbo mode" in the video so you can see the minutes window tick through the hours one.)

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@revk Cheers! Yeah, I do agree about the green minutes. It's because we can so obviously see the spread change size as it worms its way across, right? Just looks naff.

I guess with a 60-LED strip you're stuck with this problem with the minutes. Unfortunate, because I reckon this spreading is a sweet way to communicate the units' different sizes, and lets us read the gist of the time, if that's all we need, at a glance.

In software, I'll likely try upping the resolution to 120 LEDs.
