michaelgemar,

@gregorum @startrek I really think the franchise works best on television.

michaelgemar,

@gregorum I was actually ok with the political aspects of the prequels. I just thought that, personally speaking, the writing was pretty clunky and heavy-handed. I think Andor showed there’s plenty of room to do political intrigue in the Star Wars universe.

michaelgemar,

@gregorum I enjoy the excitement and spectacle of the original trilogy, but I agree that some of the SW TV shows have been excellent, and told stories that movies couldn’t.

My guess as to why there are so many mentally ill people in Gotham:

The Joker and Harley Quinn fall into a giant open vat of chemicals in a factory that make them "crazy". So, I'm assuming working by the fumes of said open vat of chemicals for a long period of time would have a similar effect. All of Gotham problems have to do with poverty and infrastructure as usual.

michaelgemar,

@RickiTarr My favourite take on this (from the artist John Schrag):

michaelgemar,

@explodicle @startrek I think it’s best not to ponder the capabilities of the transporter too closely, otherwise it kinda breaks the world.

New ‘Star Trek’ In The Works With ‘Andor’ Director Toby Haynes On Board

@startrek

michaelgemar,

@setsneedtofeed @startrek Which never made any sense in any timeline.

michaelgemar,

@CCMan1701A @startrek I haven’t liked Discovery or Picard, but I’ve really enjoyed Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks has been a surprising delight.

michaelgemar,

@FaceDeer @startrek Modern Trek has really pushed both the opposition to genetic enhancement and the prohibition of sentient AI. I suppose it is kinda in keeping with the “humanism” of the source material, but it seems like a blinkered view of the future. (I contrast it with the similarly post-scarcity Culture novels, where both biological modification and artificial Minds are common.)

James McKinnon confirms creative differences likely a factor in Kelvin 4 failure to start production in 2022 (trekmovie.com)

As much as most of us have long had any remaining interest in a fourth Kelvin movie long exhausted by the endless repetition of hype and failure, there does seem to be more confirmation of significant creative differences on the script that was in development in 2022....

michaelgemar,

@Son_of_dad @StillPaisleyCat To be fair, Ricardo Montalbán also didn't have the appropriate ethnic ancestry either...

michaelgemar,

@ulkesh @startrek It’s a terrific series, and Wheaton is such a great host.

michaelgemar,

@mycatiskai @startrek I’ve always been uncomfortable with how much Star Wars fandom has embraced the iconography of the Empire.

michaelgemar,

@Doug @startrek That scene was pure fan service, and after a decade in the wilderness this fan at least loved it.

How Many Star Trek Episodes Pass the Bechdel Test? (TOS to ENT) | The Mary Sue (www.themarysue.com)

I found this after reading and responding to this post here about early Trek fans’ prejudicial negative reaction to TNG. One of my responses (see here) was to point out that any fans of the progressiveness of Trek ought to have been mindful of the room for improvement over TOS, with female representation being an obvious...

michaelgemar,

@Blamemeta TOS, and Roddenberry’s original vision, was all about diversity/inclusivity.

michaelgemar,

@MaxMouseOCX @startrek That’s not the criterion for the Bechdel Test — it’s ONE conversation between two women that’s not about a man.

michaelgemar,

@Blamemeta Have you actually seen Star Trek?

michaelgemar,

@Continuumguy @startrek If Starfleet has weapons that work against the Gorn, why keep them secret?!

michaelgemar,

@lonlazarus @startrek The show The Magicians did a musical episode every year that generally was quite good, but again, the premise allowed that kind of fancy.

michaelgemar,

@stuck Terrific performance, and a great re-imagining of a character that was woefully underserved in TOS.

michaelgemar,

@RootBeerGuy @startrek The transporter is essentially magic. If you think too long about it, you’ll wonder why, for example, everyone doesn’t “store their pattern”, and thus become effectively immortal. Or why a pattern can’t be materialized multiple times, to generate an army of clones.

I love Trek, but it’s much more space opera than hard sci-fi, and often the “sciencey” bits are purely for narrative convenience (see also “holodeck”).

michaelgemar,

@ki77erb @startrek Personally, I find SNW to be, by far, the best Trek since DS9.

The most recent episode was broad, but I still found it delightful.

michaelgemar,

@doleo TOS had a gangsters comedic episode, and a cutesy animals comedic episode.

michaelgemar,

@yarr @startrek Let’s get back to serious episodes, like with 1920s gangsters, or fuzzy animals that purred.

michaelgemar,

@cyd @startrek Well, you also don’t send most of your senior staff, Including the captain, on landing parties.

michaelgemar,

@cyd True, I guess Hornblower participated in various hijinks even as captain.
