Trying to build a system to scaffold your brain is such a tricky business, because you have to balance the tools available, how you want things to work, and openness to ways that might work better.

This post brought to you by me trying to use Obsidian and so much feeling not-quite-but-almost.

I think I want something like an outliner where I can "star" items I'm ready to tackle, and all starred items appear in another view, a today agenda, where I can freely drag and drop items to reorder them, according to the order they make sense to tackle that day. And it all syncs between Mac and iPhone.

Things for Mac and iPhone has been working nicely for me at the second part of that, but fails for me at the planning part, where I'd really like an outliner.

tfw you're working on a project with someone you don't know too well, and you see an alert come in on their computer for an email from "team Kennedy"

@snarfed.org@snarfed.org Hi Ryan, I'm trying to follow a couple Bluesky mutuals (djlavoie.bsky.social and adamkotsko.bsky.social) I noticed followed @ap.brid.gy - but it's been almost 12 hours and they're still not showing up. They don't have "hidden for logged out users" active. Is there a backlog?

How do I get on a candidate's text list with someone else's name?

misc,

@rejinl Someone just called me Erik! No idea how that could have possibly happened

As far as I can tell, Bridgy Fed doesn't let you see Bluesky accounts from this end that haven't opted in? Is that accurate?

Public, shareable lists would be incredibly helpful on Mastodon - and conversely, Bluesky desperately needs private lists. And so, of course, we have the opposite.

Dial slowly turning from "Biden is horrible but he has to win to avert fascism" to "fascism is already here"

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

Obviously there are degrees, and that matters … but let's see how much farther that dial turns in the coming months

@TCatInReality The scenes from New York last night shook me a lot, and news I'm waking up to from LA seems pretty bad too!

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@TCatInReality At least in NY, Adams seemed like an eager participant. In LA they seem to have chosen to allow counter protestors to attack the encampment. If Mayor Bass doesn't approve of that call, she should say so. If she doesn't, out of intimidation or genuine agreement, I think it's fair to say "government under the control of fascists" to at least some extent (a greater one than I thought 24 hours ago)

First Hassan, now Klippenstein. Real bummer to see a new wave of leftists not merely sticking by Substack, but hitching their wagons to it from the start.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

Looking at it more positively, even if the campaign against Substack didn't kill them, or even render their name irredeemably toxic on the left, it created space for competitors and interrupted the consolidation of Substack's brand as a synonym for all blogs.

@ernie @Klaxun And beyond that, are ideologically committed to Silicon Valley's increasingly reactionary flavor of libertarianism.

It took ten years of student activism, including the construction of an encampment, for Oberlin to finally agree to divest from institutions and corporations complicit in South African apartheid. Oberlin demonstrated both its willingness to take a moral stand and its ability to screen investments with its divestment from fossil fuels. It has now been 75 years since the Nakba of 1948. The state of Israel has been found to plausibly be committing genocide by the International Criminal Justice Court and has ignored calls from the U.N. Security Council for an immediate ceasefire.
Oberlin's website asserts: "In accordance with Oberlin's history of action in response to 'instances of human suffering, natural calamity, and injustice,' the Board will consider proposals for divestment from entities that contribute to activities that 'shock the conscience.'" The conscience of the Oberlin community is beyond shocked. And that shock compels us to act. We will build community around education, advocacy, and solidarity through robust programming, including: • Vigils • Poetry and Literature Readings • Art Builds • Teach-Ins • And More
Our organizational team is comprised, in part, of Jewish students, who write," Within the promise of "never again" lies our responsibility to use our Jewish voices and bodies to stand up for what we believe is right. "Never again" means never again for all people. It is through this lens of "never again" that we condemn the way our names and our ancestral grief are being weaponized as rhetorical shields for the Israeli occupation of Palestine." Oberlin's Jewish student activists are the grandchildren of survivors of genocide and the descendants of people held at the hands of state-sanctioned anti-Jewish violence. It is precisely because of this history that they stand in solidarity with Palestine. To read more from Oberlin's Jewish students visit the Oberlin Review for an open letter.

It sucks that Instagram is the default place to live stream protests because it is terrible for sharing to other platforms.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

Playing with Streamlabs … not free, but looks like it will let us multi-stream to Instagram, Twitch, and (ugh) X for our next action, and Twitch has fixed urls/ native-ish embeds in Bluesky, so that should work better for Bluesky and Mastodon.

Would like to do or as well, but the iPhone app seems to have only one slot for a custom RTMP server and Instagram takes that up.
