    @mitten @mihobu agreed there. I pay much closer attention to local news. I'm content to get a daily "top 5" newsletter, or just have a few RSS feeds that I skim and don't try to read deeply to have a sense of "what's up."

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @mihobu These things -- national newspapers, NPR, etc. -- are narrow ideological products. There's a particular range of acceptable opinion and definition of "realism," with this subtle implication that if you don't doom-scroll or compulsively follow every development you're an "apathetic" moral defective.

    They mutually parasitize social media, with its ridiculous "posting is praxis" pretensions, trying to make us Bayesian sentiment units with a compulsion to appear "informed."

    No thanks.

    Those of us who missed out on the first batch of X100VIs are probably in for a long wait. Maybe I should've waited a minute before selling the Q2.

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @jbaty Any idea where the cutline is? Did you need to be "finger poised over preorder button" the day of the announcement? (Pre-ordered one, but maybe took a day or two to get around to it.)

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @alans @jbaty 😭 I was resigned to probably having a wait in front of me because I dithered. I'd probably be more chill if every single Fujifilm supply chain story didn't involve "... because they look super cute." Oh well. Not like I'm stuck unable to take a picture, but with IBIS those things are Ultimate Travel Machines now.

    I'm finding it more and more untenable to be unable to filter/mute things on the micro.blog timeline. This is definitely a weakness and as we have a contentious and all-consuming election coming up, over the next year I may have to limit my time there as I just cannot put myself in front of that kind of what-I-expect exposure.

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @anniegreens I think it comes and goes with a few people. The overwhelming bias is toward "safe topics in an unfamiliar bar." Some folks have flareups now and then.

    @mph I'm looking at silverbullet.md, just out of curiosity. It seems kinda neat, in its own way. Looks like if there were no Tiddlywiki, here's something that could do a lot of the same things. I don't know that I'm thrilled about the interface? Like, TW is a web page. You know what a web page is and how to interact with it. Links, textareas, buttons. You know what's editable and what isn't. Silverbullet is a markdown editor running in your browser.

    It seems is not meant for files with long (see Denote) filename date prefixes so I should probably stop trying to shoehorn them in. They just get in the way. Darn.

    @jbaty Front Matter Title will let you use the title: property to display file names. You can choose the context that happens in from a long list. Great for cleaning up the explorer in the sidebar and making your tabs more readable for day-to-day use, but sets you up for portability (or even dipping in and out from Emacs) for the long haul.

    @number6 Well, TiddlyWiki is an incumbent, so it makes sense that as trends come and go people will wonder how to make it look like the new hotness. Especially because its core fundamentals are so good. I expect it is going to survive most of the Zettel wave.

    Sometimes, the by far best action is to force someone to quit.

    Some of my favorite days as a manager were when people resigned. Not good. But still true.

    Why the hell does the phone not send phone rings and timer alerts to headphones?

    Why have I had to learn to recognize silence as the mark that I’m getting a call or an alert has gone off?

    It’s been like this for years, and is clearly a choice. I hate it.

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @lkanies You can set the phone to Announce Calls on headphones only. Then you have to hear a voice, too, but at least you're getting the "ring" in the headphones.

    Today’s inexplicably bad “feature” in Apple Music: there’s a “Discovery Station” which supposedly plays music that’s new to me, but that some algorithm thinks I would like. However, when I hit play on this “station”, none of the tracks go into the track history listing. So there is no way to look at back the tracks if I happened to like one or want to know more about it. I simply have no idea how this app is allowed to be this egregiously unusable.

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

    @mitten I thiiiink they expect you to ❤️ stuff as it goes by? That presupposes a level of engagement with the app that a certain kind of checked out product person might presuppose. After all, as a PASSIONATE MUSIC CONSUMER I want to HEART MUSIC THE MOMENT IT GOES BY so I can TEND TO MY MUSIC APP AT ALL TIMES.

    Interesting thread; something I didn't think about in my "is it worth it getting back into Perl" musings a few months ago: Perl's extreme dedication to backwards compatibility. I wonder where Ruby falls, on the whole, on the spectrum between Perl and Python re: being willing to break old things? I don't know top of my head, despite working with Ruby now at work.

    @spacewizard for my uses, the gem ecosystem is what provides pressure. Feels like every major marks the end of some idiosyncratic thing that solved a problem in a way I could understand. No idea how severe the changes are that drive that dynamic. It's always felt like a shaggy community to me.

    I need to unsubscribe from tech press sources for a bit. Decades ago, when that was my industry, I was bothered that I was a trained journalist, but that the tech industry had gotten so good at reducing reporters to stenographers. I'm good most years because at least I know the dynamics behind what I'm reading.

    But the uncritical cooing over AI features because some company let a tech blogger talk to a VP of product marketing on launch day? An industry this wealthy needs more accountability.
