While updating my subscriptions spreadsheet (a sorry state, needing one of those), I realized that I have several listed as "current", for which I'd paid for a year in advance, but don't intend to renew. Would you consider those "current" or paid for and done? I'm thinking the latter, because it moves my totals lower :).

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@adamsdesk It can hardly be called "organized" :). It's one of the first Airtable bases I played with. Here's a copy. It's super basic, sorry. https://airtable.com/apprWh68Gnarv48mU/shrLPodMS5P0rbQFc

@mph I cut my rangefinder teeth on a Canonet. Still have it. A digital version would be cool. Maybe Canon would have the production capacity to actually ship me one.

The Howm package does certain things much like TiddlyWiki does. In a good way. https://baty.net/2024/05/howm-reminds-me-of-tiddlywiki

Whenever I, or someone else, posts a link to this blog on Mastodon, it DDoS's me and brings the site down for a couple minutes.

@kev Wouldn't it be neat if we could stop thinking we need social/preview cards? The servers could just leave it to people to click the links themselves at their convenience, like in the olden times. (I'm mostly serious)

I was feeling crabby today so I made a Nope page on my blog. https://baty.net/nope

I'm mad at the trend of creating giant social media (open graph) images for blog posts that don't otherwise have images. They're basically ads.

I give up. This is just how it's going to be, I guess.

I'm coining a new acronym for myself: RASMA. It stands for "Reduce and Simplify, my ass!" and it describes my complete failure to do the one thing I promised myself I would do this year. This photo of the bags scattered under my desk is a good example of a RASMA condition. These are, I tell myself, my "active" bags. Sure, sure.

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@maique I use the Billingham the most. It's a very nice bag. Solid feel, lots of padding. The Domke is the first real camera bag I bought, so nostalgia keeps it in rotation. Still going strong after 25 years or more! And the Domke straps are still some of the best.

I'd love to keep this on my desk, but I probably won't.

Question for evil-mode expatriates. Is there any benefit to disabling the Escape key? I can't seem to break the habit of mashing Esc every ten seconds and I'd like for it to just do nothing. I assume I can just unbind the key?

When writing content, I prefer to use a CMS (currently @getkirby) and I've tried a lot of them. But what would my dream CMS look like?

https://kevquirk.com/what-would-my-dream-cms-be

jbaty,
@jbaty@social.lol avatar

@kev I want a CMS and I don't want a CMS in equal measure. It's crazy-making! Currently fumbling with Kirby blueprints, which contributes to both ends of that spectrum :)

Right now Obsidian and Emacs are locked in a fight to the death in my head. I'm afraid my sanity could end up as collateral damage.

    @mph Now I'm mad because you made me read the linked article. Team RAW here, btw. I feel like he implied that converting RAW->JPEG using software constitutes "image manipulation" but using SooC JPEGs (aka "letting the camera to the conversion") is more pure, somehow. Ok.

    Lots of scanning this weekend.

    @hl Yeah, dust can be a nightmare. And in my case, dog hair :). If hanging to dry in the bathroom, I run hot shower for a few minutes to generate some steam, which I think helps knock down the dust. Also, if he's scanning color film, using a "real" scanner (not a digital camera) that has the "Digital ICE" feature for scanning is a life-saver.

    My wife reminded me about Heywood Banks. It's been years, so I went immediately to watch his classic. "You push down the lever and the wires get hot..." I love him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOonlPWeGgs

    Rewatched "Police Story" (1985) and was reminded that Jackie Chan could do things with his body that are physically impossible. Also, ouch.

    I am so excited to have learned that the crazy powerful reminder CLI app, Remind, is actively maintained. I used it for years, but gave it up at some point for "easier" options and assumed it was dead, but Dianne is still at it today. She started working on it in 1989. https://dianne.skoll.ca/projects/remind/.

    Dug out my .reminders files and it's just like I left it. Now to re-learn what stuff like this means:

    "REM [trigger(trigdate()+3)] [_omitthurs(trigdate())] MSG Recycle day"

    Maybe, instead of failing yet again to combine all my sites, I should try something like this: https://blog.jim-nielsen.com/2024/consistent-nav-across-inconsistent-sites/

    So the image extraction bugs I fixed last night on fixed everything too well - it ended up pulling multiple versions of the same image but with different paths (used in srcset).

    This is now fixed - sorry about that @maique @amerpie and @jbaty 🙏
