@ComicBookProgressive just came across this great "von Bode" reference in Phil and Kaja Foglio's Girl Genius. I'm suspect GG might havethe densest "sly niche reference" rate in the business when you include both visual and textual gags

Absolutely going to block anyone I see posting AI written McCarthy obits done in his prose style, which I am certain are inbound

The foremost modern example of an author I respect and even recommend to others but don't enjoy and stopped reading

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@berz I've DNF'd every book of his I started except Blood Meridian - it's not even really the existential bleakness, it's an aesthetic reaction to the language. I don't like it. It's brilliant in technique, I can see that, but I have a viscerally negative reaction to the style.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@berz it's hard to discuss negative critique without seeming disrespectful on the day of an artist's passing so I'd like to be careful. I will start by saying I also (much more strongly) dislike Faulkner, if that sheds any light? I am used to and often enjoy contrived or intentionally difficult writing styles; I'm a big Pynchon fan for instance. So I have no consistent logical basis for my dislike. But I find myself deeply annoyed by the prose from the very first paragraph of his books.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@berz then the extended point I'll make is that coming to an understanding of my own reaction to his books was a big part of my gaining some clarity about the distinction between purely aesthetic preferences as opposed to (supposedly) more objective ones, and with being okay with the category "objectively good art I don't like." I used to be confused by that tension. Even more recently I've gotten comfortable with the inverse, "objectively amateurish art I love anyway" (mostly visual or music)

They're gonna need to find whole new industrial scale sources of Nope to meet just my personal Nope requirements for this "new song." Global demand may actually deplete the remaining terrestrial Nope reserves and require development of asteroid mining techniques

At some point, someone will need to explain to me what happened to Jimmy Butler. He hasn't played with real force in some time and if he had, those finals would have been a lot closer. He didn't look injured, but the change in his play tracks to about the time he stepped on someone's foot or whatever that was. He mostly played okay and occasionally was great for minutes at a time but the Heat got to the Finals because he took over games. Once that stopped happening they lacked real options

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@NateFederman I think there's a little more to it than that but I can't prove it. In earlier rounds he was able to assert himself in difficult situations. He lost that and a lot of the shot making. It could just be regression to the mean but it seemed like a bit more to me. In the last few games he even lost key possessions to KCP. I agree he's a star not a superstar but I thought not just his production but his intensity fell off

As a longtime hardcore fan since April, this championship feels so cathartic. All these days of giving all my energy to the team have finally paid off.

Congrats, Nugs family. This is our night!

Congratulations to @FateMusic and the, I'm guessing, 3 to 5 other actual Denver Nuggets fans on Mastodon. A great win in a tough, spellbinding trainwreck of a game to win the championship. The Nuggets are a wonderful team I enjoy and respect a lot and if they contend for several years that won't bother me a bit

Listening back to this weekend's Trey shows, and I still can't believe how subpar so many of these songs are.

There are a few potential gems with some reworking, but so much of the rest is quite cringeworthy -- even for the love & light & feelings era of songwriting.

Very interested to see how many of these make it to the stage.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chopaganda so it's not just stuff from that quarantine album (which was terrible)? I went into Seattle with the over/under on debuts set at 2.5 and was shocked to get 0.

Okay here's an inside post

Been seeing/hearing a lot of analysis from Friday criticizing Malone for leaving Jokic out in the fourth and acting like they got lucky. Not sure how people are missing this one. Doing that was the Mortal Kombat fatality blow. If Miami cut the lead to under 5 you call TO and get him back in. But if you leave him out for the key stretch and he comes back in with the lead holding - which is what happened - that's it. Game over. They're done the second he comes back

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@drewphish right?!? It was such a flex. An absolute back breaker.

Denver is incredibly impressive and I think as time goes on this run of theirs will be understood as one of the great ones. And luck will decide of course but this could be the start of an extended run of contention.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@drewphish and I think everyone who lost to this Miami team looks better in retrospect. Just set their regular season aside. That's a good team and especially brilliant at leveraging any weakness that you have

I'm one of those that finds value still in , especially the heavily moderated expert subreddits like the magnificent AskHistorians - unquestionably one of the greatest online communities of any era or platform. I also moderate a handful of subs and used to do more. The API changes effectively break reddit for moderation of non shitposting subs. It's not just 3rd party apps (which are crucial) but the automod bots many teams rely on. I support and have joined today's shutdown action.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@dave_heumann @rowjimmy the official app sucks so hard it's almost funny

The toxicity at the bigger subs seems much less in the last few years. I think someone staged an intervention. We used to get waves of people fleeing from the drama every six months

Meyerweb, to random
@Meyerweb@mastodon.social avatar

Twitter learned, and Reddit is fast learning, that people are not addicted to the platform, they’re addicted to the community they found there. Ruin the community, and people will leave the platform. It really is that simple.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Meyerweb this reduces to a simple motto I've been repeating over and over:

The community is not the platform.

Just like the map is not the territory.

However, reddit did have unique value as a platform for heavily moderated specialist/expert driven niche communities that is proving very difficult to replace.
