I am excited to finally share our recent paper "Filtering After Shading With Stochastic Texture Filtering" (with Matt Pharr, @marcosalvi, and Marcos Fajardo), published at ACM I3D'24 / PACM CGIT, where we won the best paper award! 1/N

@aras @BartWronski @demofox I'm also serious, come hang out in Portland with Wade & I and work for a bit on whatever out of our office. Alternatively, I'm still trying to get out to Poland at some point and take a motorcycle trip with Drobot up to your neck of the woods.

Thank you to the @i3d committee and @BartWronski for a wonderful I3D 2024, was great to attend and help in a small way. And Patrick Cozzi and Cesium for being such good hosts, including letting me take two hours of calls in their offices after the conference finished :).

@aras @BartWronski @i3d I may pitch them to hold it in Maine next year :).

Random thing I ran into in London was seeing this logo on a door and remembering always eating here when visiting SF for GDC. Turns out it’s a weirdly sprawling high end chain with owners including an Abu Dhabi investment firm, good times.

mtothevizzah,
@mtothevizzah@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@c0de517e Yeah, the article about it shutting down mentions their Abu Dhabi firms, etc. It's all very weird.

@icculus @olafurw there was also the dlopen() problem in gcc back then, where global objects in shared libraries registered their destructors with atexit() and then you had invoked dlclose() and their .text segment was unloaded. Good times. Although we should have had a Codesourcery patched toolchain at that point I thought.

Rental car review - 2024 VW Jetta. Really liked this car. Bad rental tires of course, but within those limits the handling was excellent. Engine is the base spec turbo 1.5L, and struggled a bit on steep hills, but it was fast enough to not be a problem. Adaptive Cruise Control is a first for me - slightly annoying in places, but once you get used to it, a handy tool. Android Auto, comfortable ride, huge storage space, average 33mpg over 800 miles. Would absolutely rent again.

@TomF we had a manual 1.8T wagon almost twenty years ago and it was fun to drive, good acceleration, nice gearbox, reliability was a mess though. Drivers window fell into door while driving it at speed in the 405 while raining, among other things. But that was a long time ago.

Ugh. I don't need glasses to see my desktop monitor, or anything further away, but I do need a set of glasses for reading books or my phone.

But I have discovered that trying to use a laptop, I either have to use it further away than I'd like so I have to use big text, or I have to wear my glasses and hunch over it to get my face closer. Both suck.

So instead I have bought a second set of weaker glasses, specifically for using the laptop.

Getting old is a pain in the arse.

@TomF This is part of the middle aged trifecta. The others are complaining about taking are of your parents, and then new and exciting food sensitivities. “These lattes sure are... milky. Maybe II'll get an Americano instead. So yeah, finding an apartment for my parents has been a drag.”

Setting up the website for the Render Engine Architecture Conference 2024 (https://www.enginearchitecture.org) is a surprising amount of work even with a simple website and turn-key web hosting. Dealing with email and mailing lists is like the worst thing in the world given all the anti-spam systems you need to setup: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, etc.
