@cwebber Really enjoyed your Goblin talk at CoD yesterday, and sorry I had to run. I have many ideas about ProofMode workflows for human rights documentation verification+investigation that we could build around this and Spritely things.

I was warned by a friend that the current state of German trains is shocking, and that delays are rampant. Our conductor just apologized profusely for a 7 minute delay leaving Nuremberg. I may be 7 minutes late on a four hour journey. Shocking indeed.

@ethanz I took the Coast Starlight in February, from Sacramento to Los Angeles with my 80 year old parents and 10 year old kid... an already long 12 hour ride took us 18 HOURS!!!

I sometimes have the feeling that there is certain kinds of essential that either requires developers to already be assholes to be able to build it effectively, or working on it turns the developers into assholes. This is stuff that we all need, that society is built upon. I appreciate the work, but personally want nothing to do with those communities. Yet it is also important that essential software is free software and open to contributions. It is a paradox I often think about.

@eighthave Funny the idea that working on certain kind of difficult, essential software can turn you into a less kind human, but totally believable as well

Join us for a great @TechSoup event on May 2nd on ProofMode and https://events.techsoup.org/e/mzbnvm/ "How Can Civil Society Participate in the Decentralized Future Of The Web?"

The decentralized web (DWeb*) is the product of a technological movement that aims to distribute the internet (including data and applications) across a network of connected devices as opposed to large, centrally controlled entities.

n8fr8,
@n8fr8@ohai.social avatar

The current, centralized version of the web allows a few big companies to control its infrastructure and provide the rules that govern our interactions and experiences. DWeb proponents say that removing central control of the internet allows for distributed power and gives individual users more control over how they interact across the system. DWeb technology can be particularly valuable if this underlying ethos resonates with your organization’s mission.

But what does the Dweb look like in practice? In this special event, Nathan Freitas of the Guardian Project shows how a decentralized approach has enabled his team to create easy-to-use and secure apps that enable activists to protect their communications and personal data from unjust intrusion, interception, and monitoring.

The Guardian Project has developed ProofMode: Verified Witnessing, which is being used to document war crimes. The app turns photos and videos into secure visual evidence that protects against alternations and the creation of fake photos. The app can be used by activists, journalists or humanitarian organizations looking to safeguard their work in this age of perilous global communication. https://events.techsoup.org/events/details/techsoup-techsoup-events-and-webinars-presents-how-can-civil-society-participate-in-the-decentralized-future-of-the-web/
