Hornsby is the fifth best place to live in Australia, apparently.

At least, according to a study SGS Economics and Planning:

"Sydney's Northern beaches ranks as the highest in the nation for wellbeing, with only one Queensland city making it to the top 10, the annual index revealed today.

"The Australian Capital Territory came in second due to its low gender wage gaps, climate change risks and the division of wealth."

The study assessed 518 local council areas on seven indicators:

  • economy
  • income and wealth
  • employment, knowledge and skills
  • housing
  • health
  • equality, community and work-life balance
  • environment

The top 10 local government areas are:

  1. Northern Beaches (Greater Sydney)

  2. Australian Capital Territory

  3. North Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  4. Ku-ring-gai (Greater Sydney)

  5. Hornsby (Greater Sydney)

  6. Lane Cove (Greater Sydney)

  7. Mosman (Greater Sydney)

  8. Sutherland (Greater Sydney)

  9. Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  10. Brisbane (Greater Brisbane)

wtf? Hornsby is a shithole isn’t it? At least it was when I lived in the hills ~10 years ago. you have to drive most places, the Westfield is a nightmare that ate the old arcades and small businesses, basically nothing to do except shop, crap food.

Its redeeming characteristics were being close to Eastwood and Epping for some actual stuff going on. Also trains into the city were clean.

Idk what this list is though, the northern beaches is also peak, cultureless, suburban hell.

Just sydney in general is a bit how’s it going but like compared to chatswood, paramatta, the inner west etc which are similar in terms of degree of builtuppedness Hornsby is worse in all metrics except maybe quality of schools?

you can’t get around, there’s no culture, no sense of community, no… anything. It’s the beige blandness that appeals only to bougie people afraid of anything unexpected that think the height of living is ordering your life out of a catalogue.

I think if you shop at Davey Jones and even considers private schools you’re the sort of bougie bland person that horrifies me so haha.

Not again! BoM issues Flood warning for Qld and NSW.

"A major rain event will engulf most of eastern Australia during the next 48 hours, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology to issue flood watches from southern Queensland to the NSW South Coast.

"Greater Sydney could be soaked by up to 200mm from late Thursday to early Saturday, potentially leading to major flooding along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, while Brisbane and Canberra also face the prospect of heavy rain."

Hmm. 50-150 mm tomorrow for us, up to 50 today and up to 50 Saturday.

We’re on a hill so lucky ducks but last time we got 10% of the year’s rain in a day quite a lot of trees up and died.

got powerlines over the property so height limited. Probs not a terrible idea though if we can find dwarf cultivars. The flowering natives tend to be a bit sensitive to wet feet (although the teattrees do great)

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

Yup. You have to be a special kind of trusting to allow a company to modify your brain.

Banal attempts at mind control, crude as they are, are bad enough already.

I don’t have a healthy brain? Could be better could be worse but no fucking way would I let a private company with a shady safety record run by an insane megalomaniac fuck with it.

Anything that’s plugging into your brain just can’t be controlled by a small group of people with the sole motive of line goes up. Open research and public ownership are required. The consequences are just too terrible otherwise.
