One of the things on my mind is how everything/everyone assumes 'the cloud' is permanent and forever - businesses and technologies built on this assumption, while the research shows it is incredibly fragile - infrastructure which will break down in days in any disruptive event.

After spending a month with whooping cough*, I can definitely say that you don't want it.

Terrifying night time choking episodes that make it very hard to sleep. It does stuff to your throat so you it feels like you can't clear it - you instinctively cough out but you can't breathe in as it goes into a spasm.

The secret is to sit down (it's easy to black out), swallow repeatedly, breathe slowly in through your nose if you can and know that it will stop happening in 20-30 seconds. If you do black out, your body stops the spasms and you will be OK.

Prevention is best - time for masks again, and avoid busy places if you can.

  • Not verified as the doctors gave us the wrong swabs and never asked us to do another one, but it's increasingly hitting the news.

There was a phenomenon in my past life working on computer vision at Sony where it was relatively easy to get something working 80% of the time, but from that point, most approaches would turn out to be impossible to improve on.

This is so dangerous, because it's easy to impress people with an 80% solution, and claim that getting the rest of the way is just a matter of time, while in actual fact it's just a bad solution.

I feel this is an issue with a lot of technology at the moment.

Heading back to Kernow with bags packed full of yarn and soldering irons after a super productive week working in Sheffield with @yaxu (more on what we did soon) and extra special thanks to @solderandchaos for the soldering gear - we'll put em to good use.

One nice thing about research 'impact' I picked up recently is that it's not something ever that researchers can do, it's something that other people do with your research. If a researcher talks about creating or doing impact, or impacting 'the public' they've got the wrong end of the stick. All they can do is create conditions in which other people are more likely to do something useful/interesting with their work.

@yaxu a key thing I think is to listen to and involve the "potentially impacted" and allow them to shape your research, rather than "helicopter in" solutions with the expectation that everyone is going to be excited by them. A lot of bad research seems to follow the latter path.

When do you think mainstream news will start reporting on the next AI winter (not speculating on it, but reporting on it already happening)?

nebogeo,
@nebogeo@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu the link with the post office scandal seems like it might be pivotal, as it was a similar approach to outsourcing objectivity to a complex system and believing bug ridden nonsense over people: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/feb/06/dont-wait-for-post-office-style-scandal-before-regulating-ai-ministers-told

@yaxu I think everyone can see what's coming, basically - it's just where and when, and how many lives ruined

nebogeo,
@nebogeo@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu oh it wont be investors and developers lives ruined, they'll just return to crypto or something - it'll be other people as usual

Recently I've been programming in ReactJS, Kotlin and Rust - and something important I notice about learning new languages is that "is this just an elaborate joke?" phase that takes a while to work through.

I've been trying to get into Halt and Catch Fire, three episodes in to series one and not enjoying it at all. Is it likely to grow on me or should I give up?

This syllabus around it looks awesome, but just not finding anything for me in the actual episodes so far..

Given that every single train in the UK (in the south west at least) is reliably delayed, seemingly due to gradual and widespread collapse of infrastructure - surely reason would insist that the solution would be to alter the timetable to build in contingency based on this?

nebogeo,
@nebogeo@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu I noticed they seem to have stopped putting times on the led signs, or announcing them so you enter a kind of timeless zone inside the trains
