Can’t wait for the “actually LLMs are a worthless scam” articles in 2025 and all the people that pretend they never fell for it

nfrgrt,

@thomasfuchs
That was my personal conclusion as well. When it came out, I was skeptical but didn’t want to be the greybeard, so I took my personal prompt engineering skills seriously.

After like 6 weeks of observing myself, I decided to cut the crap because you’d almost always waste your time debugging generated code, whilst reading and debugging code already being the biggest productivity killers.

Most of the time it’s better to RTFM and actually understand what you’re trying to do.

nfrgrt,

@ErikJonker @thomasfuchs
Not exactly sure about that. While LLMs being a fun tool to play with, almost everything some hypedrivers came up with are much more reliably solved in the old world. Past few months I felt bombarded with half-working BS that was either already a solved problem (with much higher energy efficiency) or not a problem at all. E.g. if you think that writing and summarizing emails for everybody would be a good thing, then you might rather want to reconsider your email usage..

nfrgrt,

@ErikJonker @thomasfuchs

No offense but why would I prefer a "search" engine with results I have to cross check all the time given it's hallucinating in random ways instead of duckduckgoing or straight going to wikipedia?

Why would I generate code with sth that's making more mistakes than any code generation tool from mid-2000s?

Translation is fine, though. It's an interesting programming model; I consider Copilot UX to be great but for most of the things you list it's underwhelming to me.

This is exactly what these tools are for https://heather-buchel.com/blog/2023/09/ai-generated-ui-is-not-innovative/

@baldur I for one would highly appreciate replacing managers with a cheap subscription service. Any product recommendations? 30% error rate is perfectly fine and still a big improvement over real suits

I'm not impressed either. The according discussion on HN smelled a lot like BS, where lots of commenters superficially "just loved it", something which felt unusual for cynical HN folks (especially in the realm of "yet another js tooling silver bullet").

Are we in an age of orchestrated tech hypes where some nonsense tech is put in public media and referred to by some journalists/politicians/managers with, at best, mediocre competence?

nfrgrt,

@dirksteins @bkastl

One of the things that I'm really enjoying about working with LLMs is that I feel liberated from /syntax/

I'm used to spending a substantial portion of my intellectual energy when I'm writing code thinking about the very specific syntactic rules of the programming language I'm working in

When I'm writing with Copilot, GPT-4 or Claude I hardly spend any time thinking about that at all, which frees me up to spend more time thinking about more interesting, higher level problems instead

nfrgrt,

@simon
I’d say it’s an absolutely legit programming model to be embedded into products that provide value, maybe copilot and the like in your case.

But all the rest reminds me so much about the crypto-alike hypetrain with only managers and politicians making the wrong calls and public media spreading fud and hype. What’s horrifying to me is not “using AI” but the erratic decisions fueled by some clever marketing tricks.

nfrgrt, to random

I think the best outcome of the current poly-crises in Tech industry (WFH blackmailing, massive job cuts, "AI" replacement shenanigans) is the tech people to wake up and realize that they've been lured into a shiny world of plastic and lies.

Instead of fueling the centralization they should start doing following their ideas again and make the Web and tech world look like the weird thing it used to be.

nfrgrt,

@alper @quincy Our guesses are not mutually exclusive, but yours just comes on top.

FWICT Germany systematically created a bubble of "German IT" in the past 1-2 decades (as in "How the world looks like if OOP was kept as a silver bullet") backed by industry and education system and a lot of arrogance and ignorance.

nfrgrt,

@alper @quincy
IMO CCC did more for tech education than the whole German education system. They got criminalized from early on by the then German governments. CCC is some of those people I’m thinking about when I’m saying that Germany is not lacking talent, it’s lacking competent tech leadership.

nfrgrt,

@alper @quincy

And btw First Principles thinking ("taking things apart") is one of the pillars of silicon valley. Everyone esp in media is talking about investments, but as you can see in German digitization efforts, the pure money (3.5B EUR AFAIR) doesn't get anything done, if they blindly apply legacy textbook shit.

nfrgrt,

@alper @ratkins @quincy Okay just to give you a hint that you're on the wrong track blaming "digital activists" for pretty much anything: It's people of the German mainstream education fucking things up for 20 years. All the people at IT-Planungsrat are some Phd-ers or consultants. No Datenschutz involved, they manage to screw it up all by themselves.

nfrgrt,

@alper @ratkins @quincy

And btw: Datenschutz has become the first excuse for anything not working. This is simply a lie to cover own mistakes. That said Datenschutz evangelists could be a bit more pragmatic here and there.

nfrgrt,

@alper @ratkins @quincy

Without knowing the exact context of the case you're talking about but from my experience with German politics "digital national ID" sounds like it got nuked by 99% by federal states and their leadership. And they will publicly argue it's because of 1% Datenschutz.
