I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T for my cell service. I already had AT&T fiber at my house so the bundle became a much better deal. I upgraded to a pixel 8 pro through ATT, and my brother who is on my plan kept his pixel 7a running lineage OS 21. Standing next to each other in our house I get 300 down and 5 up, and he gets symmetrical 300 Mbps over 5g. This is just using the speedtest.net app. I assume AT&T is doing some kind of throttling, but this implies it happens on the phone. (1/2)

Does anyone know what would be causing this? I would very much like to have much better upload speeds over 5G should the need arise. (2/2)

In my house, there is a door in the kitchen that goes to the basement stairs. We put a cat door in it, and a fancy one at that. It has switches so that you can control which directions the cats can move. We needed this because our 3-year-old cat Janet wants to play, and 8-year-old Phoebe does not, so Janet ends up in time out to give Phoebe a break. It took Janet MONTHS to figure out the door as a concept. This week she figured out the switches and time-out is no more.

The troublemaker

@Bridgemakes She is a poly-dactyl tortie so she might out of pure tortie-tude spite.

But seriously thanks for the suggestion.

The reason this is such a big deal is we need to keep the door closed once we have a toddler so they don't take a tumble down the stairs. My wife and I are adopting and that is a requirement of the home study.

@mikey @Bridgemakes Janet has a chip. She is very friendly and curious. She always wants to know what is on the other side of the door and for any random stranger she will roll over and beg to be picked up and carried.

Forgot to post this as a follow up to a previous post. I have the best wife in the world who got me this as a random present.

My at&t fiber modem died today. No power surge (it's on a UPS anyway.) It just shit the bed and died. Stores don't stock fiber modems for these situations since a new install requires a tech to come run the fiber line. So it will either be shipped a new modem by Tuesday, or pay a $100 service fee to have a tech come out and replace it tomorrow.

I am begrudgingly paying the $100 fee because my entire life is online. That and I care way too much about the uptime of my game servers.

I recently did a genetic test to find out what kind of anti-depressant and sleep aids I should be on. (Something HIPAA protected, not 23&me.)

Turns out my genetics make most medications risky for me, as I am prone to severe side effects. There are three antidepressants in all of modern medicine that my doctor would consider putting me on.

To pass prior auth for them, I have to have tried and failed on at least two other cheaper ones that we know for sure will cause side effects.

Fuck America.

I created my Google account at least 15 years ago and never deleted a single email. (I am fully aware that I am a digital hoarder.)

I decided to clean it up last night and deleted ~35,000 emails and unsubscribed from dozens of mailing lists.

All of this cleanup netted me about 3 GB of free space. Which makes me wonder, how the hell do the users at my work fill up their 99 GB 365 E3 mailboxes? I know it's attachments, but it's still wild to wrap my head around.

I've never posted pictures of my cats here so rectifying that error.

Janet is the little one on the left. According to me, named for Dr. Janet Frasier from Stargate SG-1. According to my wife named for Janet Weiss from Rocky horror. She is polydactyl and a whole mess of rambunctious.

The bigger one on the right is Phoebe, named for Phoebe Buffay. She is our anxious girl who doesn't like new people and loves to just sit on the couch.

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 ().

The new manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube .

is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to (@mozilla) and/or (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

EFF (@eff) on Google’s Manifest V3:

EDIT for clarification: MV3 in Chrome will still allow some ad blocking extensions, but will severely limit their blocking ability and even restricts pre-set filters to 50 MAX.

My problem is that I have a chrome enterprise account that is primarily used for managing chromebooks for elderly relatives who shouldn't be allowed near a computer, but have to pay their bills and things.

uBlock Origin is ESSENTIAL to keeping them from falling for scams, as they have done in the past.

I really don't want to have to buy them a new router because the all in one provided by the ISP doesn't allow for custom DNS/Pi hole in addition to the management of that.

@catsalad

Chromebooks and Chrome Enterprise make that more affordable and easier to manage. I could get them cheap Windows 11 devices and set them up with an e3 license but that would be more money and quite frankly not worth it.

A $250 laptop with 10 years of updates and a cost for peace of mind of $11 a month is a bargain.

Debating if $200 is worth it to renew VMWare user group or if I should just switch to proxmox.

Already done some reading and it seems like I can just stick a clonezilla ISO on the VM's make a backup to my NAS and then restore once I switch the hypervisor to proxmox. Unfortunately, I don't have the hardware to run in parallel so it's going to be a process of backing up the VM's, wiping the HV, and reloading and praying

night_chrono,
@night_chrono@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@mikey I spun up an instance of proxmox on an old optiplex I had lying around and was able to boot one of my Ubuntu VMs hosting a web app. Seems like Clonezilla is going to be a fairly solid way to migrate

@mikey my electric bill is already 300 a month. I think if I took my other proliant out of storage my wife would have some words.

Just ditched Chrome for Firefox, including on my Chromebook and Pixel. Can't escape google completely, but not giving in to their new tracking system.

My wife doesn't understand Star Trek, but she wholly supports my obsession.

She drove from Cleveland to Akron to pick these up for me as a surprise yesterday. Now to wait for the 5 pin to PS2, and PS2 to USB adapters to show up.
