Hey waste time and learn with me "Starting forth" https://www.forth.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Starting-FORTH.pdf believe it or not will actually teach how computers run.

nixfreak, to forth

Something is seriously wrong with me! Hockey games in the morning for kids , working out after getting home and now I want to re-start learning again. For some reasons computer language history really makes me think why the languages we have now.

Just got my copy of "Let Over Lambda: 50 Years of Lisp" by Doug Hoyte (2008). Considered the successor of Graham's "On Lisp", "This is a book about programming macros in lisp".

An intriguing, challenging, mind bending reading. Looks fun.

nixfreak,

@amoroso niiice , actually started looking into LispOS's again.

Holy buckets. Just had a great idea.

Has anyone done events, like calendar events, on Activity Pub?

Basically just use the protocol to broadcast .ics events or whatever is the most reasonable format?

It'd beat bandsintown.com and could actually compete with Facebook's chokehold on event stuff!

nixfreak,

@frigginglorious Yes there are apps and instances for events / parties. https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/

Really loving the instance I'm on is https://sopuli.xyz . If you are hating reddit and want something else/better check out a lemmy instance.

@gibson we are still merging with Velid network though right?

nixfreak, to random

@thegibson Hackers.town is place of logic, reasoning, leaning and having fun. If we go with FB that ends really, really quick. Please keep cyberia free of bullshit and corporate dominance.

nixfreak, to random

building scanning tools and security tools is what *nix is all about. I'm talking gather information just using unix tools and outputting results. You really don't need "skiddie" tools to do it. Plus you actual learn how the protocol , services, works. Just my 2cents.

I have been looking into using keynote for its ability to export presentations as video. My thought is to use this method for creating YouTube content. If there is anyone on my followers list or who knows how this works, what is the best way to set this up? If anyone can help I’d appreciate it.

nixfreak,

@RaymondsCorner Are you referring to slides and converting to video?

You missed BO2K?

You long for the old days when we owned the wires?

Be there.

nixfreak,

@thegibson I thought the beta was still available ?

If vaccines really did contain computer chips someone would have ported Doom to them by now and posted to Hacker News about it.

nixfreak,

@pwaring Thats amazing lol

I love this library https://github.com/HugoGranstrom/nimiSlides

Its so nice to have "enhanced" slides to work on and use. All compiles to html , you can use css and regular also.

Continued absurd Linux problems:

If I run in Wayland,
and run Chrome,
my custom .XCompose file is ignored.

Chrome on X11 does not have this problem,
Wayland apps other than Chrome do not have a problem,
if I use default XCompose sequences instead of custom XCompose there is no problem.

It's just this one combination of things.

Checking the Chromium bug tracker I find variations of this bug repeatedly filed, then closed, as far back as 2015 and as recently as 2021, closed as "fixed".

I really like , so nice to use.

I don't why but using polish notation for math is way easier and faster than standard.

nixfreak,

@JoYo kind of.

Sick of PPT (powepoint) looking for an easy and great looking slideshow library. Check out https://github.com/HugoGranstrom/nimiSlides

I have been using this to create training materials for new people. The developer is really friendly too and responds.

where can I get samples ?

"In General Electric’s annual report from 1953, the company bragged about how much it paid in taxes and how much it was spending on payroll. It explicitly said that “maximizing employment security is a prime company goal.” The founder of Johnson & Johnson said that the company’s responsibility to its employees was higher than its responsibility to its shareholders. Corporations then had a radically different conception of their role in society compared with corporations today." https://archive.is/66hPb

nixfreak,

@codinghorror We can blame for the change in demeanor. Ever since Regan started to cut taxes for the rich it all changed the mindset. Sad really...

@mathew @woozong @theruran @nixfreak AmigaOS would have been a better foundation, as it already had preemptive multitasking (soft real-time, even). All it lacked was memory protection, but that could have been added with a purpose-built memory management unit.

nixfreak,

@vertigo @mathew @woozong @theruran Yeah I agree was good multi-purpose system, its too bad they didn't last longer.

vertigo, to random

@woozong @theruran @nixfreak We tried (c.f. Plan 9). The answer is inertia. There's just too much software written for Unix(-alikes) that nobody wants to revisit.

nixfreak,

@vertigo @woozong @theruran Yeah I want to use an old laptop and run Plan9 on it. Even though everything for Plan9 is in C language.
