Alex Schroeder @alex checked out Medley Interlisp and shared his first impressions and goals:

https://alexschroeder.ch/view/2024-05-11-distractions

By the way, Medley does run on the Raspberry Pi but as a Linux application, not on the bare metal as Alex probably means:

Oh no, I installed the Medley Interlisp system on my laptop because I've been following @amoroso for too long! 😅

The first goal is to have a retro-computing environment that can be useful. As far as I can tell, the documentation buttons open links in the browser outside (!) the Medley Interlisp system, i.e. I can read the documentation on my default browser.

The second goal is to have a Lisp machine where everything is Lisp. I mean, I guess I usually treat Emacs as a Lisp machine.

I feel a bit of that Plan 9 energy, but from a different planet.

@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@alex Welcome to the dark shade side, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

The browser mostly opens for PDF documents or HyperSpec entries. For everything else you can get documentation inside Medley, try these commands at an Exec:

MAN DEFINEQ

or:

MAN PACMAN

A sneak peek at a Common Lisp program I'm writing on Medley. Figuring what the program does is left as an exercise.

@lispm It's a great exercise.

👆 I posted the initial code and some notes on Insphex, a new hex dump tool in Common Lisp I'm writing under the Medley Interlisp environment. The program is similar to the Linux command hexdump.

I wonder how much more of this type of thing it's going to take before people just raise the Jolly Roger instead.

@mike As Amazon and other big tech companies are realizing, they can get away with pretty much anything as most customers will tolerate nearly any amount of abuse.

lots of discussion about #emacs and #lisp on mastodon

is this representative of real world trends or just a bubble on mastodon?

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@rzeta0 I don't know. But what matters to me is I'm having lots of fun with Lisp, even if it's not representative of real world trends.

To the folks, I got a question.

I am trying to remember a service from the late 90s that allowed you to download news from selected channels and read offline, which was sort of a big thing back in the days of dial up.

I remember seeing it on Cnet when that was a show on Scifi and a decent website.

It's now available the paper of the Medley talk Andrew Sengul gave at the European Lisp Symposium 2024. It outlines the history of Interlisp, introduces the Medley revival project, and presents the main features and facilities of the environment.

Is there a way I can make a separate feed or timeline in Mastodon with toots from specific hashtags? Like, can I make a timeline that only tracks toots with the hashtag?

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@xinayder Yes, you can do this:

  1. turn on the advanced web interface in the Mastodon settings
  2. search for a hashtag
  3. click the feed settings icon at the top of the column with the hashtag results
  4. click the pin icon

📻 We are broadcasting a ZX Spectrum game over the air in collaboration with Radio Student! This week marks Radio Student's 55th anniversary, and they were among the European stations broadcasting computer programs over the radio in the 1980s, a tradition we are reviving. The game being aired is Kontrabant 2, originally released by Radio Student in 1984. 🎮

These unofficial Mastodon accounts of space agencies are bots that merely share news items the agencies publish elsewhere, yet the accounts have quite a lot of followers:

  • NASA: @nasa 71K followers
  • ESA: @esa 1.4K followers

There's an unfulfilled demand for public institutions to communicate on open and independent platforms.
