notabot,

You can, but I found it a bit laggy. It basically wraps your tcp stream over https, so I think the extra overhead was what was slowing it down.

notabot,

M’Debian.

(Had one too many problems with Fedora)

notabot,

If there’s a question about whether it’s a biscuit or a cake, leave it out for a few days, if it gets softer it’s a biscuit, if it gets harder it’s a cake, and if it gets covered in ‘gravy’ there’s an American in your house.

notabot,

Indeed they are, as adjudicated by the courts of the land. I like the reporting here, especially:

Customs and Excise had accepted since the start of VAT that Jaffa Cakes were zero-rated as cakes, but always had misgivings about whether this was correct.

Cargo ship had engine maintenance in port before it collided with Baltimore bridge, officials say (apnews.com)

The cargo ship that lost power and crashed into a bridge in Baltimore underwent “routine engine maintenance” in port beforehand, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday, as divers recovered the bodies of two of six workers who plunged into the water when it collapsed. The others were presumed dead, and officials said search...

My understanding was that the authorities at least realized they needed to contact them, but there was only about 2 minutes between the distress call and the impact, so I’m not sure they could have escaped even if they were notified.

I keep seeing reports that there were other vehicles on the bridge, but nothing about the occupants. I don’t know if they mean other work vehicles though.

ETA: It looks like they might not gave had direct radio contact with the work crew, and one of the police officers was going to drice to them, but the bridge collapsed before they could: story

notabot,

The company certainly would have had a way to contact them, but it seems the port authorities didn’t. They were also working ‘in the middle’ of the bridge, so could have been a mile or more from safety. Given the timing of the distress call, even if they’d been notified instantly I don’t think they had much of a chance unfortunately.

notabot,

It’s usually not so much jealosy as a sense of fairness. Sometimes that judgment is skewed, maybe they don’t remember they had the largest part last time for instance, but kids tend to be ok with situations they percieve as fair and very unhappy with situations that seem unfair.

notabot,

Which is why you end the fight before it starts. The greentext got lucky but by reacting oddly enough to make the robber pause then leaving they did the right thing.

I’ve been in a similar situation except I punched the thief before they drew the knike and then left. The fact he was obviously high as a kite probably helped. Ultimately, a knife fight between two sober, focused opponents, who are intending to kill or seriously injure will likely end as you suggested, but it the aggressor isn’t actually ready to fight the fight can be avoided, or ends up much less lethal.

notabot,

That’s the thing, if the other guy actually means to harm you and has a knife, and you’re within range, you’re going to get injured or killed. If they just mean to scare you you might get lucky. Telling the two apart in the instant you have isn’t always feasible, but you can usually tell if someone’s impaired enough that you can get away. Yes, I got lucky, but it was an ‘educated’ choice as I’d seen him, rather unstably, coming.

I was taught that if you’re faced with a potential fight you try to talk your way out of it, failing that you run, and only if you can’t do that do you fight. If you have to fight you do so to end the threat as quickly and safely (for yourself) as possible.

notabot,

Hackers aren’t the only way to meddle in an election, just the easiest to categorize and deal with.

notabot,

I’ve been keeping half an eye on it for a while, I should probably give it a go again.

notabot,

The internet in it’s heyday, when it was a genuinely thrilling place to find information, and quite a lot of weirdness, and before it was swamped by corporate interests.

I remember starting out with gopher and a paper print out of ‘The big dummies guide to the internet’ which was a directory of almost every gopher and ftp site (pre web) along with a description of what you’d find there. Then the web came along and things got really good for a while. Once big corporations got involved it all went down hill.

‘Jesus wept’ is the shortest verse in the bible, so it’s sort of used to invoke supernatural protection (I say sort of as it’s really just an exclaimation nowadays, even by those who aren’t religious).

It’s mostly just used when you witness the result of something going badly.

Lewiston, Maine mass shooter had traumatic brain injuries, new scan finds (www.nbcnews.com)

“Robert Card had evidence of traumatic brain injury. In the white matter, the nerve fibers that allow for communication between different areas of the brain, there was significant degeneration, axonal and myelin loss, inflammation, and small blood vessel injury,” lead author Ann McKee said in a statement issued by the family...

notabot,

That’s pretty much it, yup. Think about it this way, if you can feel rhe blast it moved some of your cells. If you feel the blast right through you it moved, and possibly damaged, cells right through you, including in your brain. As we’re learning from TBIs in sport, sometimes just one hit is enough to do permenant damage. From other sources I’ve read, it does seem to take a lot of blasts, but no one’s actually sure as it hasn’t been studied properly.

notabot,

Music has nowhere near the same ‘impulse’. The shockwave from an explosion has the presure jump from atmospheric to massive in an incredibly short timeframe, before falling back over maybe a few tens of milliseconds. It’s this sharp transition that’s likely to be causing the damage, but as I said, there’s not enough research in the area.

Interestingly I’ve just come across a https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5483448/ showing DNA and structural damage to the brain from exposure to loud noise, so it’s not just blasts that’ll do it.

We’re really only just starting to realise all the ways we can damage our brains, I suspect there is a lot more surprising science to come.

notabot,

They don’t think they’re trying to steal because they’re convinced the government has set up a secret account for them, funded with several million dollars, that they can use to pay their debts, if only they could work out the exact form of words to use.

notabot,

I have no idea why they think like this. I suspect some are just convinced that there’s a giant conspiracy and now they’re in on it, and others are just desperate to get out from under a crushing debt they’ve got themselves into and are willing to try anything that gives them hope.

notabot,

Bah, a magnetised needle and a steady hand is the one true way to edit code on your prod system.

notabot,

There are fewer incoviniently placed spiky bits on an elephant than a stegasaurus.

notabot,

Training. Lots of training. That’s why I, I mean my friend, wants to hire them, I’ve no idea how you do that.

notabot,

I’m on the same version. I get a small bar just next to the comment itself, but not it’s replies.

notabot,

Sort of. If you’re using wg-quick then it serves two purposes, one, as you say, is to indicate what is routed over the link, and the second (and only if you’re setting up the connection directly) is to limit what incoming packets are accepted.

It definitely can be a bit confusing as most people are using the wg-quick script to manage their connections and so the terminology isn’t obvious, but it makes more sense if you’re configuring the connection directly with wg.

notabot,

Ah, ok. You’ll want to specify two allowedip ranges on the clients, 192.168.178.0/24 for your network, and 10.0.0.0/24 for the other clients. Then your going to need to add a couple of routes:

  • On the phone, a route to 192.168.178.0/24 via the wireguard address of your home server
  • On your home network router, a route to 10.0.0.0/24 via the local address of the machine that is connected to the wireguard vpn. (Unless it’s your router/gateway that is connected)

You’ll also need to ensure IP forwarding is enabled on both the VPS and your home machine.

notabot,

The allowed IP ranges on the server indicate what private addresses the clients can use, so you should have a separate one for each client. They can be /32 addresses as each client only needs one address and, I’m assuming, doesn’t route traffic for anything else.

The allowed IP range on each client indicates what private address the server can use, but as the server is also routing traffic for other machines (the other client for example) it should cover those too.

Apologies that this isn’t better formatted, but I’m away from my machine. For example, on your setup you might use:

On home server: AllowedIPs 192.168.178.0/24 Address 192.168.178.2

On phone: AllowedIPs 192.168.178.0/24 Address 192.168.178.3

On VPS: Address 192.168.178.1 Home server peer: AllowedIPs 192.168.178.2/32

Phone peer: AllowedIPs 192.168.178.3/32
