I don't know, pick one:

A. You have an excellent education, the means to answer questions: building a consistent understanding of the world. You are hard to trick. That said, you live in a society where the powerful can't be criticized. Many things you know cannot be said.

B. You freely and loudly express your ideas. But, you have very little education, formal or otherwise. You have been tricked before & know you could be again. You just don't have the best tools to prevent this.

@futurebird On the other hand, the more educated you are the more complex the world seems, and the less adequate to it your own understanding. You see more clearly the constraints on your own choice, and what ability to speak you have can seem just shouting into the void. In a way, each of those options is the way the other feels.

It's not hard to see where education can seem a devil's bargain, that flips on it's head what you thought you were going to get from it.

I don't know how my ancestors survived.

apex predator who could easily subdue and eat me in a tree

my brain: Kitty Cat! Little kitty cat! Let me hug it!

@futurebird Have you ever seen one in person? I haven't, but I have seen cougar (aka mountain lion, or catamount) and they're scary in a way that doesn't come through in pictures. I totally get wanting to hug a bear (don't!) but never a cougar.

It occurs to me what might be the reason why western authorities are reacting so brutally to protests against genocide in Gaza.

I doubt it's specifically some strategic need to keep Israel as an ally.

I think they're UNEASY that significant popular opinion suddenly objects to tens of thousands of brown people dying far away, if only in this one case.

They weren't expecting that to happen.

Their climate change strategy kind of hinges on us not caring about that.

@petealexharris Don't underestimate the role of conservative Christianity's weird (because often also anti-semitic) devotion to Israel, nor the role milenarian thinking is playing in the far religious right - Israel standing alone, surrounded by enemies looms large in such thinking. So it may not be deep strategy, but short term political gaming.

@petealexharris Good point. I (fortunately?) lack personal insight into the UK right, unlike for the US.
