Who doesn’t like Hackers?! It’s fantastic! I’ve never heard a bad word about it.

What in the name of the gods is that font 🤔

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Let’s also not forget it’s adult connotations, things are rated “X” for a reason 😅

x.com would have been a great URL for the XCOM games!

Imagine buying something from these people after this.

Yes, sometimes I don’t play a game for 5 years, but I bought and own it, and I know it’ll be there when I come back to it.

…unless it’s Ubisoft, then purchases aren’t really purchases, and you don’t have any right to expect your property to be there when you get back 🤦‍♀️

@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Well, it’s special because that’s where all our most important family videos are, and I don’t know how to get them onto a computer without paying a bunch of money, because we’re poor and can’t splurge on unnecessaries >.<

Oooh, there are Reddit clones? I’d love to check one out! Surely if they’re cloning code or outright copying something proprietary, they’d get shut down immediately though right?

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

To be fair, quite a few subs I enjoyed a lot were permanently shut down and disappeared :-( Makes that website a lot less fun for me now. Such a shame.

Affordable? I’m not here to pay people for things, that’s for sure 😅

As a techie that doesn’t like cats (people seem blinded by their cuteness even when every other personality trait is negative, they destroy things, only look out for themselves, don’t care about you whatsoever, will refuse to be trained and not learn boundaries, etc) this saddens me.

I much prefer dog content personally. Where can I go for the latest hot dog content on this platform? 🔥

Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Hi, I am a guy in early thirties with a wife and two kids and whenever I go on youtube it always suggests conservative things like guys dunking on women, ben shapiro reacting to some bullshit, joe rogan, all the works. I almost never allow it to go to that type of video and when I do it is either by accident or by curiosity. My...

It could be where you live too, maybe?

I live in the UK and never see ANY right wing stuff, even though we have our fair share of xenophobic nutjobs (some of them are even running our government’s immigration department currently).

But I’ve heard that some places in the USA may be extremely polarised regionally, and so maybe that coupled with your other demographic information such as gender, age, occupation, etc, might be giving YouTube the idea that you probably fit the standard local mould for a right winger and thus might appreciate the same suggestions?

That’s been my best guess whenever I see this kinda thing mentioned, though honestly it’s just a guess! It always seems to be USA people suffering from it too :-(

Maybe the laws against hate speech, disinformation, etc, aren’t as tight there and YouTube doesn’t have as much incentive to hide that content? That seems less likely, but who knows! When I lived in the USA I saw soooo much more blatant flagrant lies in official emails, ads, media content and such, it seemed acceptable in a way it’s not here.

Hahahaha this is genuinely HILARIOUS.

Thank you, I needed that.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

I tried it too, but it seems my pihole already has that domain fully blocked. Probably for the best.

Phew, good little pihole!

Any lurkers here still mostly lurking?

It’s so weird how Lemmy feels like old reddit and that was when I was more active but as reddit grew I began to lurk more except in four different communities. It’s still hard to not lurk here. I frequently will type a comment or make a post and delete it, haha. Anybody else experiencing this?

I hate myself and I’m pretty sure others will too if I let them get to know me.

What consumers and products? I only see numbers on a spreadsheet going up and down!

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Is this why Jerboa seems to not work any more? It keeps insisting I’m not logged in, when I am, showing me as anonymous, but also showing my profile details, not letting me interact with things, etc… It’s been a big problem these past few days making Lemmy unusable :-(

I don’t know what you mean by blue or green bubbles (I use Android, Chomp for SMS, Discord to IM, WhatsApp for the stragglers) but I’ve never met anybody so shallow that they’d give up a friendship over what brand of phone you use. That’s the kinda thing a very childish 13 year old might do.

I think you might need to re-evaluate who you think your friends are, if they’d rather cut off contact with you than receive a slightly different looking text message. That’s incredibly, INCREDIBLY weird.

no one in the UK sends SMS messages

I do, I use stuff like WhatsApp and Discord too mainly of course, but an SMS is fast and reliable, as opposed to the others that require a decent data signal on both the sender and receiver (which is often lacking on my network unfortunately).

Plus, I can schedule SMS messages for a particular time so as to not wake the recipient up if I want to send them a message in the middle of the night, very handy!

Plus, I can theme my SMS app however I want, changing colours, fonts, etc, to be exactly what I like, as well as picking out an SMS app that has the features I’m looking for in the first place (I recommend Chomp). I find applications like WhatsApp to be extremely limited in this regard. Not a deal breaker, but I do love customisability and choice.

I certainly don’t use SMS anywhere near as much as Discord, but it’s wonderful to have it, and I use it regularly :-D

P.S I’ve wanted to use Signal for years but nobody I meet uses it :-( Such a shame, it seems neat!

P.P.S Telegram looks neat too, unfortunately again the adoption with people I know is strangely just 100% furries and nobody else, so I stick to the client that everybody uses rather than having a bunch of them installed (Discord & occasionally WhatsApp).

You didn’t mention which devices this is compatible with, which even on the Android side is very limited, unfortunately.

It’s a neat idea, I’m glad it exists, but I can’t be sure it has full support the way stock Android does, and it’s not necessarily compatible with my Android phone anyway, and I’d have to root my phone and void the warranty, so I think I’ll give it a miss for now.

Maybe in a few years I’ll try it on an old phone that I don’t mind killing if something goes wrong, just in case! :-D

Jerboa is the best I’ve used so far, though hopefully Boost will be even better when that’s released!

Boost for Reddit was an absolute top tier application.

Meta is just Facebook trying to hide their awful reputation under a new name. I will never call them Meta.

I’ll be damned if I’m going to use any more of their spy products than I have to, too.

Unfortunately, voting doesn’t help. Besides there being basically no parties with any real strong climate policies, when you vote a decent sounding one in, they just go back on their promises anyway.

And even IF we vote in a party that truly brings about radical and positive climate change policies, that’s just our one country, a drop in the ocean. The rest of the planet would still drag us down with them, even in that wildly positive scenario.

I don’t mean to be a doomsayer, I just don’t see a way out, I wish I did. Voting certainly doesn’t solve our problems, climate change or otherwise. The rich ruling class will do whatever they want, regardless.

I’ve been wondering exactly this, Lemmy will have to be shut down in the EU if it doesn’t comply with GDPR, and considering that means each individual instance and the individual/group/company running it…

I just don’t see how this is ever going to be secure enough to fully comply with GDPR. Not when huge security holes like this exist, where anybody with a tiny bit of knowledge and a few hours can access so much data on people anywhere…
