Just got my Spotify data - had to wait a few days for it to arrive. Was going to do something with it but now can't remember what.

Probably something with - will have a play later.

@simoncox When you add the post number to your URL or at least don't start with the date the likelihood of the link breaking due to missing chars or misspellings is far smaller.

If I were you I'd remove the date from the URL completely as you publish evergreen content not daily news.

www.simoncox[.]com/shorts/123-tracking-broken-links-with-fathom/ would be much better. This way anything after 123 gets restricted to the proper post automatically.

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@simoncox I mean "redirected" not "restricted" [sic!] of course!

That was defiantly [sic!] a spellchecker mistake.

jon, to random
@jon@henshaw.social avatar

This is absurd and ridiculous. It sets a dangerous precedent for the open web and sharing of ideas. The focus is on Google and Meta, but this ultimately affects the indie developers and news-focused sites and services. It’s a link tax. It’s a horrible plan that will 100% backfire on these publishers and adversely affect their reach.

Journalism and its publishers are not in a good place right now, but this is not the answer.

https://techpolicy.press/google-and-meta-owe-us-publishers-14-billion-a-year/

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@jon There is no such thing as a "link tax". This is a term popularized by Google funded NGOs.

Publishers and creators need to get paid for content they create.

Instead now Google and Facebook are practicing industry scale content theft and getting all the money tax free funding the billionaires who own them private islands and mansions.

Why do you hate journalists like that? Do you own Google shares?

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@LouisIngenthron @jon Google is increasingly displaying third party content on their properties. Most searches are "no click" searches by now.

With AI search ("SGE") Google just uses copy and pasted or regurgitated third party content on their own sites and the chance of click through is minuscule.

Why should two gatekeepers get most of the advertising revenue on journalistic content globally? Can you please explain that?

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@LouisIngenthron @jon I'm not Wikipedia. Please look the "citation needed" parts up yourself. I thought you love Google.

SGE is the next phase of Google search they are preparing. Apparently like with the no click searches you have no idea about the current search landscape. Please do some research to understand.

You think the "paperboy" needs to get 90% of the newspaper revenue while controlling global distribution? What a misguided metaphor. You clearly don't know what you are talking about.

Nice test by @bhartzer on AI written text on his blog - spoiler - he edited it all.

It is confirmation that Google doesn’t care it is AI written because it is fulfilling people’s questions and proving good answers.

https://www.billhartzer.com/ai/i-posted-39-ai-generated-articles-clearly-attributed-to-ai-heres-the-results/

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@simoncox @bhartzer Yeah, sounds like a lot of work though.

So in other words AI does the fun creative work and you do the tedious and boring editing work.

I'd rather write it myself then from the start.

Here’s an idea: let’s call people “people” on the fediverse instead of “users” whenever we can.

Compare:

“There are 42 users on this instance.”

vs

“There are 42 people on this instance.”

Which acknowledges our humanity more?

Language matters. We don’t need to perpetuate mainstream technology’s othering/colonial framing of “us” – designers/developers/other “clever folks” – and “them” – the users (usually one step removed from “dumb user” and usually the ones who get used).

#peopleNotUsers

onreact,
@onreact@mas.to avatar

@aral People are the plural of person. A persona is a mask originally. Humans are not "persons".

Accounts would be more accurate. As not all accounts are run by people and some people have several etc.
