@mpirnat So Apple Music suggested some artists for me based on listening to “Allfather” by Neon Odin after I saw you posted it.

You might wanna check out “Badlands” by Magic Sword which has a movie soundtrack-like quality to it. Also “Nights at Lake Milson” by Midnight Danger is like old horror movie music.

Well, I just got done watching a great movie. Maybe I'll risk it all and watch a bad one next.

@onelson Not sure why you’re considering PacRim when looking for a bad movie

Traded in my Orange 35RT amp for a Boss Katana Artist 100W this week. Even with the Boss at half power, it sounds fantastic. I was apprehensive about having a modeling amp, but after hearing it, no worries.

I haven’t even really messed with the effects and channels. I just have it on a “clean” setting and send my pedals into it. It’s made guitar practice just a little more enjoyable, so that’s worth it.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@mpirnat Oh, and I really wanted to try an Orange Super Crush 100 because I’m curious about the transistor tech that’s supposedly more tube-like while being solid state. But it’s a little more than the Boss Katana Artist in terms of money, and both are way more wattage than I’ll ever need.

@onelson probably some percentage of the boss’s echo value. But the value from your world or their’s, idk. Seems like helping someone on NG+ when you’re not would be totally lopsided

ME: oh hey, a presumably modern version of sloccount, 'loccount', written in Golang. Let's check this out, since OG sloccount doesn't even know about Rust.

author: Eric S. Raymond

I think the best thing to come from these LotR movies were the EA video games that were sort of like beat'em ups. Co-op combo mashing. So fun.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@mpirnat @onelson I’m kind of curious to check out LotRO, which sees you taking care of things happening while the Fellowship is on their journey.

For example, you have to retake Weathertop from Uruk-Hai who move in after the Fellowship encounters the Nazgûl there.

I got a lot of good shit done tonight, and my movies are over, and I have just a little more I want to burn through so....

so....

I've put on The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition, which

which,,,

APPARENTLY has like a 4 hour runtime. What the fuck. Who wants that much of this??

By the time I learn how to make decisions like normal people, instead of dithering forever, I will probably be on my deathbed deciding when specifically to shuffle off this mortal coil.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@bitprophet I’m not sure there is a normal for decision making. I will study options forever on some things, and barely think about others.

I think, in a lot of cases, it’s what we care about that influences how much time we put into deciding.

bitprophet, to NextDNS
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

OK. I think I've got myself set up for + permanent access to all of my (most importantly, my custom search/proxy server):

  • account (will likely subscribe shortly!)
  • on all devices, set to auto-connect (and I'll just have to deal with the mild battery inefficiency from this 😵)
  • Tailscale DNS settings configured for NextDNS + ignore local DNS
  • Tailscale DNS further configured to send my private home subdomain to my router's Class C IP
palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@bitprophet I’m a little confused - so your home network’s DNS isn’t set to use NextDNS, only the Tailscale network is?

I’d think if the UniFi device was handing out the NextDNS info your iPad would work, so I’m missing something.

My mission this weekend is to do any coding at all in sublime text so I can ween myself away from my Jetbrains stuff.

If I can prepare myself for sublime text only next week at work, I'll be glad.

I've got some small fixups due for markhor, but also I might get back into my little game dev project. Sort of exciting!

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@onelson the focus bit sounds like it could be a setting.

But that’s also the plague of text editors; everything’s a setting

Been having a bad time with JetBrains products lately so I'm shopping editors.

What do y'all like?

I work mostly in Rust, but have a situation at work where I have to touch 7+ langs regularly, so I need something explicitly polygot.

Hit me up with your favorites, and if you want to elaborate as to why, I'm here for it.

As I learn more about electronic music, I love the idea of using hardware devices instead of a digital audio workstation (DAW) like GarageBand.

The downside is that it takes up way more space and costs way more money. But with some of the modern innovations in MIDI controllers/standalone devices, centralized control without a screen is really doable.

Basically a MIDI network. Wait…shit.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@onelson Maybe? I don’t remember if you did.

I have a Korg NanoKontrol for something like that. If I find something capable of USB-MIDI I may be able to use it in this setup.

Almost a decade ago, I bought one of those lifetime supporter licenses for Alfred. Despite that, I always kick some money their way on every upgrade. Alfred 5 got £10 from just now. Small cost for a small bit of software that makes my life immensely better.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

Went over Poison’s Rock You Like a Hurricane at guitar lesson tonight. It’s actually really fun to play! Managed to keep up with the tempo for the most part, though my fretting accuracy was completely toast by the end of the song.

palendae,
@palendae@linuxlab.sh avatar

@mpirnat I got lessons because at least I’m accountable to someone, and it gets me at least 30 minutes a week.

I’ve definitely fallen off on regular practice. Doing a song full of bar chords hurts right now, but I know I’ve been in a place where it didn’t.

But I get it. Other stuff gets in the way, and our intentions don’t always map to our actions. I’m trying to gently steer myself towards more creative pursuits this year…we’ll see how that goes.

There was a comment by a Japanese player in the fighting game community that American players are as talented and hardworking as Japanese players despite having a worse record in matchups. It's just that the US community uses ephemeral mediums like Discord while Japan shares information and techniques in wikis. Japan could get the US in shape by sending a few nerds over, he joked.

Anyway, I'm looking at where one goes to get Python help these days.
