Mastodon absolutely needs more journalists. We should not have millions of people boosting one another’s ideas without a solid contingent of people in here professionally trained to vet stories, check facts, and use best practices for sharing news. It is, imo, an urgent issue & critical for the ongoing success of the fediverse #Press

@LALegault @seachanger I have been lurking on Bluesky, where most of the Twitterati/chattering class seem to have migrated, and it is Not Going Well over there. Not just in terms of making Black/other marginalized users feel safe (which is a truly embarassing other can of worms), but in terms of being a very boring echo chamber within an already walled garden. They need enrichment, and the fediverse needs people with their skillset.

@fraying Union membership has been on the decline for decades. The 20somethings probably don't have any idea what it means to have a union at your back, or why it's bad to scab. Not that it excuses their actions, but labor history is probably not a part of a post-No Child Left Behind curriculum

The changing state of social media right now is such that being on three different platforms at the same time can function as a kind of elimination information diet experiment. I am also on Mastodon and Bluesky. They are about as opposite on the spectrum as they can be.

Mastodon is a bunch of nobodies (complimentary). Nobody's there for clout (or if they are it's a real shit place to try and do that). It's just a bunch of people talking about their lives, in interesting as well as boring ways. It is remarkably free of performativity.

Bluesky is People Who Think They Have Important Shit to Say and their friends. I mean it derogatively and descriptively. A post there is pitched to spread, appeal to other people. I don't want to say it's inauthentic, but there is level of polish to everything there that's A Lot.

Which isn't a surprise at all! Bluesky is full of Word People who rely on their ability to write and speak to make a living. But when too many of them get together, it gets to be a bit much. Doesn't matter if I agree with them or not.

@imp @katiegeeks Darwin got used to me being around all the time because I started WFH in March 2020. And Husbando was off for a couple months when we thought it would be temporary (lol) and the shit fit he threw when he went back to work was incredible lmao

(Now we are both home all the time and the little shit is the happiest he has ever been)

I have poked around BlueSky and followed some people who have left/reduced their presence on Twitter. It's fine I guess? I think this is where the former Twitterati/talking heads are going to land, if only because it was there first and does not appear to be quite as hellscapey as Threads.

Like, if you wanted a Twitter clone without Phony Stark's influence and less Nazis, it's perfectly cromulent.

But there's no vitality there (yet), just people talking to each other in a walled garden.
