eythian, to random

I've been rewatching Malcolm in the Middle recently. The biggest thing is taught me is that Americans can't pronounce the name "Craig" properly.

penryu,
@penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

@eythian ... How do you pronounce Craig?

penryu,
@penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

@Screwtapello The truth is it's regional. Some regions pronounce the "ai" in "Craig" to rhyme with "paid". Other's pronounce "bag" as "baig" (rhymes with your "Craig").

In all honesty, I say "Craig" somewhere BETWEEN "Cregg" and "Cray-G".

Let's talk about the surname "Davies" now...

penryu,
@penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

@Screwtapello I'll go first:

I've always read "Davis" as "DAY-viss", and "Davies" as "DAY-veez".

Now I hear Welsh and possibly other Brits say BOTH as "DAY-viss".

penryu,
@penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

@Screwtapello And don't even get me started on "clerk" and "derby."

Lots of fun stuff going on at Lockheed today apparently

Things that happened to me today:

  • woke at 4:30am to watch a 1,000 year old ceremony back home
  • went to two flute lessons (kids')
  • drove downtown and got a flat
  • had flat tyre replaced and still made it to my destination...
  • destination was public talk by Michio Kaku. Caught last 10m but was pretty disappointed, as was my 15yo who came with
  • planning on walking my dog up the road at 8am (if still awake) to watch local student smelt iron

So pretty normal day...

penryu,
@penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

@mattgodbolt How convenient to get a flat downtown! Normally I have to drive to the suburbs for those!

I once said in a blogpost that I get no kickback from product links, and readers were surprised.

So here it is: I am not here to shill.

My personal blog and personal social media accounts are personal and I operate them at my own personal cost... for fun.

Any links are direct to the product manufacturer's site wherever possible. I make no income from them. All links have had any unnecessary URL portions removed.

(That said, I also rarely link to commercial products.)

This reminds me of watching White House press conferences under the Trump administration.

I can't think why.

Neither one will make most folks happy.

@shafik unhappy is what makes them good options!

    @evan I'm interested in how instances are categorized? What makes an instance "professionally-oriented" vs amateur or social?

    It's entirely possible this is documented somewhere and I just didn't realize.

    Everyone agrees that the S3 fan service was out of control. But what we really want to know is: why wasn't Groppler Zorn included in some way?

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tastytronic AFAICT, all the seasons are fan service. But it's fan service I'm enjoying. :)

    Do you like Star Wars?

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @evan It's "fine." It's decent sci-fi schlock, like it's frequently mentioned counterpart.

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @evan

    In a job interview I was once asked, "Star Wars or Star Trek?"

    "Doctor Who."

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @evan It was a sort of culture interview session, and the format was a bunch of "A or B?!" questions in quick succession, presumably to test your ability to make "tough" decisions with no context on a moment's notice.

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @evan Are you asking why I subjectively choose one absurd yet fantastical sci-fi series over another (two)?

    I've enjoyed all three. I prefer Doctor Who. By a substantial margin.

    Dear Everyone Praising the "Successful" Writer's Strike,

    This happened 15 years ago, and "the market" responded with thousands of hours of "reality television", conveniently sidestepping any need for writers.

    Still no easy solution as long as "the public" are still swayed by puerile dramatizations of idiotic mock history.

    penryu,
    @penryu@hachyderm.io avatar

    If you have a series you genuinely love, or a streaming service that provides you the quality fiction you crave, pay them. They deserve your money more than the Jersey Shore or Yet Another Serial Killer Soap-Drama.
