🔗 Microsoft Recall – Pixel Envy:

"Recall is the kind of feature I have always wanted but I am not sure I would ever enable. Setting aside Microsoft’s recent high-profile security problems, it seems like there is a new risk in keeping track of everything you see on your computer — bank accounts, a list of passwords, messages, work documents and other things sent by a third-party which they expect to be confidential, credit ... https://explodingcomma.com/2024/05/23/microsoft-recall-pixel.html

@andyn On-device is better than elsewhere but still feels risky, given Microsoft's track record lately. I have also seen a number of people raise the concern that this sort of thing is a domestic abuser's dream, i.e., where physical access to the device is not a security measure. More broadly, though, this feels like a solution in search of a problem.

The business book Industrial Complex would have us believe that the keys to success are hiding in plain sight. For just $29.95, we can unlock the secrets of billionaire CEOs and visionary founders. But the truth is, most of these books offer little more than survivorship bias masquerading as insight.

If you want to understand the forces that shape industries that make or break companies, you're better off looking to the past.

@Daojoan I subscribe to the If Books Could Kill guys’ theory that these are all basically the same book.

Just heard that hometown boys GATECREEPER from right in my backyard here in Arizona are going to announce their highly awaited new record soon, potentially this week. Gatecreeper rip. Even Corpsegrinder says so. Here's their last one from 2021.

🔗 How Tech Outstayed Its Welcome:

"I am not sure how the tech industry changes its course, as doing so would be walking back a decade of growth-at-all-costs business strategies that make user experiences subordinate to showing Wall Street you grew 11% in a quarter. Tech companies have walked away from consumers, treating them like crops to be harvested rather than living creatures experiencing a world that has become ... https://explodingcomma.com/2024/01/30/how-tech-outstayed.html

A workplace behavior that really bugs the crap out of me is the person in a meeting who keeps getting distracted by IMs on their laptop or phone and says “Sorry, keeps pinging me.” In my org, we refer to these as a “y/t?”

Sometimes I feel like it’s the person receiving the messages trying to show how important and/or busy they are—and that’s annoying—but I actually don’t think that is the real problem. I think the real ... https://explodingcomma.com/2024/01/22/a-workplace-behavior.html

"If capitalism is supposed to be efficient and, guided by the invisible hand of the market, eliminate inefficiencies, how is it that the tech industry, the purported cradle of innovation, has become a redoubt of waste and unproductivity?"

While I personally tend to prefer sci-fi as a genre over fantasy, I find this idea that faster-than-light engines, energy weapons, and all the other plot contrivances upon which sci-fi depends are somehow less magical than dragons, amulets, books of spells to be pretty ridiculous. I think it is pretty much all fantasy but people want to find some reason to claim that their favored subgenre is somehow more grounded or true.

A Mastodon feature that I would find very handy would be “Unfollow user if more than X% of their posts are about Mastodon or “the fediverse.” And to be clear, that is not unique to Mastodon… maybe that’s your bag and that’s fine, but I am generally not any social platform to read a lot about the platform itself.
