It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.

anyway, here's my bsky: ..."

@SuperDicq @foone @filippo
>Mastodon gGmbH has no control over the protocol and the fediverse at large. It just develops the Mastodon software.

Mastodon doesn't have control over the ActivityPub protocol itself, however Mastodon/Gargron has control over how the Fediverse functions as a whole. This has been demonstrated many times before. Either by sabotaging proposals (FEPs), disregarding proposals, ignoring ActivityPub specifications, ignoring how everybody else does things and instead doing it completely differently.

The summary part of the object used for post titles was used like that before Mastodon was a thing and Gargron reused it for content warning, forcing other servers to adapt to this stupidity. When Mastodon adopts quote replies or emoji reacts, it's pretty much guaranteed that they will do it differently than everybody else.

The nature of the ActivityPub specifications also doesn't help at all. It forces developers to make things up, or lie about certain things. It's very much a non-specification.

You can see the effects of this when you listen to normies/media. For them Fediverse isn't a thing. It's called the Mastodon network. It's Gargron's network and we are just living on it.

the solution to admins reading your DMs is to set up Quantum Key Distribution following the BB84 algorithm and apply OTP to all your posts

phnt,
@phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

@Hyolobrika @SuperDicq @susul That's a good point and one of the biggest reasons why any DM system shouldn't be ever used for private messaging that's not expected to leak someday. If you want to talk to someone securely, use XMPP/Signal/Matrix and other options that allow that. No DM system will ever be private, because server/DB breaches can happen.

You could send encrypted messages via a DM, but at that point you are reinventing OpenPGP encryption via email.

Love how everytime there's spambots anything but pleroma is sitting ducks.

phnt,
@phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

@kirby @lanodan The reason probably is that they are easy to abuse (pernia's autotagger). Mostly a tradeoff between a needed feature and building other tools that are harder to abuse.

Personally anything without custom message parsing and modifications does not exist to me.

@SuperDicq @ceo_of_monoeye_dating @straw If I would say that to the generation after me, I would be immediately called a racist, xenophobe, bigot and ruSSian fascist. I'm not even exaggerating.

My generation doesn't really care about it that much, we still have our typical Czech humor and mindset. Younger generations are overpolitized to the point that 13 year old kids on Twitter will have "Right-wing, LGBT supporter, destroy Russia, free palestine" in their bio.

phnt,
@phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

@SuperDicq @ceo_of_monoeye_dating @straw It's been almost US specific and now it's spreading in Europe. Not that it will get you a fine, or in jail. Yet.

wtf

phnt,
@phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

@lanodan Could be done with some aspect ratio boundaries enforced. At that point you open up yourself to supporting them universally on Pleroma, even in the picker, which in its current state would look bad.

@FUCKINGWHOCARESDUDE @Paradox @mischievoustomato I wouldn't be comfortable with someone knowing they went through all my soycial media, of which I have basically none, to figure out what I like and people I meet and what family I have. I'm not saying it's bad being interested in someone like this. They way it's done is too much in my opinion.

Why do most WM users use the shittiest fonts imaginable with AA disabled.

phnt,
@phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

@kaia I guess, if you don't mind making it also more difficult for yourself. The ones I see on fedi are usually the default/fallback bitmap fonts that are incredibly hard to read.

    @ageha @chjara @kaia Most languages that I know of and use DMY, developed ways to imply the time frame someone's talking about. When I say it's on the 5th, everyone know it's this month, because I would naturally phrase it differently. Another usecase where DMY, or to be specific DM, is more useful is sorting papers based on age where the year doesn't matter. DD.MM feels way more natural.

    In the end DMY and YMD are useful, while MDY is unusable and hard to read.

    phnt,
    @phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

    @ageha @chjara @kaia Sorting is just one use case for dates.

    phnt,

    @kaia Because DDG doesn't really care about your privacy.

    phnt,
    @phnt@fluffytail.org avatar

    @kaia Should be fine with ublock Origin. They just don't have a good track record when it comes to transparency. Their mobile web browser advertised tracker blocking, which worked for most, excluding Microsoft's, because of their agreement for Bing data (the search engine behind DDG's results).

    Sadly alternatives don't really exist. I have my issues with Brave and I don't want to pay for search results (Kagi).
