Ok, that was a fraction bit confronting for my liking ... but it's shit I have to do with a smile and compassion

Just had a 6 or 7 year old on a push bike stop right next to me ... she said her liked my hair ... then asked me if I was a girl or boy ... well I told her the truth, "I was born a boy and have always felt like a girl" ... "you look like a girl" was her response ... then we chatted about what she is doing and when school goes back ... that's when her dad finally caught up ... all went well ... it's always gives me anxiety in these situations

Since I’ve recently had more attention than usual out here on #mastodon, perhaps I should finally get around to an introduction…

I am currently retired after 40 years working as a woman in tech. I’ve been communicating online about the same length of time, and am finding Mastodon one of the nicer experiences.

Though born in New Orleans, I have lived outside the US more than in it, with important phases of my life spent in India (boarding school) and Italy (1st marriage and raising my daughter). I’ve traveled extensively in Europe and Asia, and a few other places. I am now settled in Australia with my 2nd husband, Brendan Gregg, and his son. Altogether I’ve had an unusual and interesting life, I’ve written about a lot of it on my website https://www.beginningwithi.com/ (with photos and video as well).

Here on Mastodon I mostly post about my current passions, gardening and Lego, and about my travels (upcoming: India and Paris). I don’t talk much about tech lately — I’m too burned out and jaded — but have previously shared many experiences and opinions on my website.

@melissabeartrix hahahahaha i can confirm that lycra is not fire safe whatsoever and in fact melts thru the skin to solidify again under the surface and require being dug out with skin grafts following. generally something to be avoided, in my professional opinion as a retired firetwirler / pyrotechnician / fire safety officer / materials engineer / expert / consultant anyway

there's a group of materials called "aramid fibres" that were developed by dupont and are produced under licence ONLY by Souix Engineering which is owned and run by the Souix nation. kevlar is one of that group, but it stands out in the fact that it is not hydrophobic. see, the fabrics were developed to be able to withstand high temperatures. eg kevlar doesn't start to break down and burn away until it gets above about 350 degrees celsius, and the rest of the materials in the class like nomex which is worn by race car drivers and pit crews have higher temperature tolerances as well as the hydrophobic quality that liquids don't soak in to them but instead form beads of water and fall off due to gravity.

firefighter clothes are made of aramid fibres. the huge jackets are actually really lightweight despite being so amazingly thick because they've usually made of coated nomex and have kevlar or uncoated nomex insulation in them as well. the difference between coated and uncoated nomex is a layer of plastic which binds fibres together and prevents wicking, which is when liquids get caught between fibres. wicking in the insulation is a good thing because it pulls sweat away from the skin.

there's good reason why my handle is that of the indigenous spirit that serves as basically the high priest to the spirits in the flames

@docjohng only because i have an oculus quest 2 (VR headset) and have to keep a meta account as a result. would have dropped the social media site when i retired as a stage dancer and began a career as a parent of a special-needs child and have never been interested in instagram due to age demographic.

ever since they changed their feed to not include every post from contacts but instead focus on monetization the site has been haemorrhaging interesting-content-generating users and most people i know use it mainly for chat while maybe about half still also upload photos to share with family and close friends

@LinuxAndYarn i don't think there is. the first image being the focus of a collection has been the norm for social media sites since imgur first came alone that i am aware of and probably for a lot longer before that.

what mastodon seems better at encouraging, however, is putting alt-text onto images for people who might be visually impaired or for clients that are text only. using these to ad context is the best suggestion that i can give you

    People who say Mastodon won’t last as a social media service don’t know shit. They do not even realize how persistent I am to keep my sites up and running!     @rolle if mastodon was going to die, it would have done so years ago in the first 24 months that it existed like so many others have. instead it has proven resilient enough to maintain a dedicated userbase who will never go away, which therefore ensures its' ongoing survival.

    also, it's decentralised and therefore something that the rich will never be able to take out of the hands of the poor
