I am blown away by #Jolla's new subscription model... I can understand why it is necessary, but at this point I would go with #PlasmaMobile with #PostmarketOS: open source as I wish #SailfishOS was

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ilpianista i actually don't mind the sub model since it seems flexible. I run community hardware though, so don't need a lic. I just buy stupid sony hardware to support jolla! On the opening up end, things are moving, albeit slowly. About 20 repos went live this last week. 4.6 contained a couple of things I lobbied for, so I'm biased favourable.

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ilpianista yeah, they could suppory some us devs a bit more. I do minimal to fair maint on over 50 packages. I did find that the more I was able to specify or make PRs that changes came. Jolla made lot's of changes that I directly lobbied for and it helped me maintain, currently extend (videoworks), stuff.

I think out of all the Star Wars stories, The Bad Batch had the best overall story arc. Bittersweet but perfect ending.

@sinbad i thought the bobba fett series met these criteria?

@sinbad ah, got it. I watched them interleaved. With Andor sometimes stuck in between.

I've started writing up my thoughts, design, and development thinking for an ESP32 based sort-of-educational pseudo-analog synth toy/hack/plaything meant to be used with a breadboard for extras.

I'm probably tempting fate by posting about it at this point, but I had several posts in draft so thought I'd hit "go" on them anyway.

When I get the actual boards back, if the posts all suddenly disappear, you'll know it was a bit of a disaster!

@ghosttie rice. 11-15 minutes on low heat. Drain. Back in pot. Cover. Let sit 3 minutes. Perfect. I'd say I was an intelligent device. Smart if I search out a barber.

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic ah, i went and read your second article and now see where you are. I recently built a circuit from gijs gieskes that is essentially two caps, 22 & 220 uF and a vactrol. It's used as tremello but has a nice simple variable response for being a diy vactrol. I'll ask him what values he used. I have one circuit on bread board with similar smooth curves and will measure tomorrow. Doesn't the esp have a dac?

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic Ok, I'm a bit confused, since all my LDR5549 (up to 10M ohm) and the Xvive (1M ohm), of course, work really well with PWM output from a nano (actually a LGBTF328). The output there is < 2 volts. My vactrols for this test where just using 3 volt rated leds (which seem to tolerate up to 5 volts). I have to admit, I just tested various leds with LDRs in the appropriate range (> 1 Mohm). Did you try various LED types?

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic Ok, since I stumbled down the rabbit hole, but vactrols concern me on another front, I thought I'd at least document in deference to your excellent efforts: https://poetaster.de/blog/2024-04-21/

the tldr is, works fine when the vactrol is not controlled by PWM from the MCU. Driving the LED with PWM produces a high pitched whine. This can probably be easily solved. But I'm out of time :)

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic You do not drivel. Your articles are, even if they cover well known terrain, a very clear guide to the uninitiated. And sometimes a needed reminder for those of us who neglect documentation. That'd be me.

Yes the PWM carrier is bleeding through. I'll see tomorrow if I can find a simple fix.

On the PWM front, PICO, did you know that one needs to make sure GP23 is pulled up to keep the pico from dropping into PFM power saving mode and forces PWM mode. Clean PWM.

On the anniversary of my Lo-Fi microcontroller performance of John Cage's 4'33", I have a new work - a microcontroller interpretation of his ORGAN2/ASLSP "as slow as possible".

I've used a @Raspberry_Pi Pico running as slow as possible to perform a short extract of ORGAN2/ASLSP.

In this proof-of-concept, admittedly, the Pico isn't running all that slow, but it's a start and will do for today.

So here is PICO2/AFPOC

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic neat. Interesting coincidence. Last week I ported the glitch storm firmware to rampart (my nano mini modular thingy). It's a byte beat synth, better than my own attempts some years ago. Using timer two, you can drop down to 256 HZ ... Some formulas change radically depending on speed. Pitch, obviously, but, not solely. https://github.com/poetaster/rampart has a sketch.

I've added some notes on how to collect together the hardware required for a prototype PicoDexed, including how to use a cheap PCM5102 DAC with it.

I've also now uploaded a prototype UF2 file that can be used directly.

If you have a Pico and a DAC - feel free to give it a go! :)

@diyelectromusic I just read through the post and and one thought since I'm adding the samish circuit to a number of designs. Consider audio in passthrough (think of pocket operators?) and consider a volume pot. I usually hack the former and latter in with just 2 caps (dirty) but the picokore has nice audio out and the circuit is also simple. https://infinitedigits.co/img/pikocore_schematic.png Just some thoughts ....

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic That scarp design was, in the main, todbot's picostep. I'm doing one thing which plays l-systems as 'ragas' and draws the corresponding trees. That's in circuitpython. And the other things are pikocore where I'm trying to keep the adc partly free for external input.

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic This is the hack (as yet untested) for clock/midi I was thinking of

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic i took a look again and though your articles are sunstantial (understatement! ) I didn't get the jist vis. the lib? Just doesn't perform?

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic i should note: the pc817 design is not my own. I just have a lot of them and asked myself if they might do. A german audio forum had this design as the answer. The author stated that the transistor stage was essentially internal on optocouplers like the 6n137. While staring at it, I realized that it was essentially identical to the amplifier stage on the pikocore clock input. It's on the bench today, so wish me luck.

poetaster,
@poetaster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@diyelectromusic do you need some testers for pico dexed or is it coming along as it is?
