Hail Freya, it's Friday!

For this week's #FridayPaganPoll I'm wondering how many Pagans here are into astrology.

How much astrology do you know?

@Cat_LeFey I think astrology and horoscopes were my gateway into tarot. Then tarot moved me into full blown paganism.

Mostly I know Sun, Moon & Rising and that's the extent of it all.

I cannot believe there are still witches out there claiming to be from a long line of “hereditary” witches since before Gerald Gardener. Cringe. I really hope none of the kids are falling for this.

The witch-cult hypothesis has been robustly studied for nearly a century, and has been thoroughly disproven. This is common knowledge within the Pagan community.

There were many growing pains along the way, but now, we've accepted that we are re-creating and re-building paganism inspired by the ancients, not continuing any hidden unbroken traditions. And that's okay. It’s actually really special, being the first in your line, and creating traditions that might last into future generations.

@Cat_LeFey @MyrddinEmerys this whole giant thread is so lovely.

I personally don't mind pulling out pagan practices that were absorbed into Christianity. To me it's just a reminder that there is nothing truly fixed, our perspectives and practices are always shifting.

It's great that we can add a new part to the tapestry by pulling out the bad threads and weaving in old and new learnings and practices back in.

A ring of silver and a ring of cast iron, perfect for protection and purifying?

update: iron ring leaves a weird brown mark after wearing it for a little bit :-\

poweredbylemonx,
@poweredbylemonx@pagan.plus avatar

@Malleus The care instructions say to treat it like a cast iron pan and treat it with a light oil sometimes. Maybe if I put some olive oil on the inside it will help my finger & it get along better.

The deli right behind my house exploded from a gas leak today. Miraculously nobody was hurt, everyone had some deviation on their normal routines so that they were elsewhere when normally they would've been in harm's way. The fire department came quick and saved the building and stopped it from spreading. Nothing else is damaged outside that one business.

I'm not gonna claim all the stuff I did for Beltane helped, but I'm not gonna say it didn't help! 🤷‍♂️

poweredbylemonx,
@poweredbylemonx@pagan.plus avatar

@Crazypedia Thank you! It was extremely lucky that nobody was injured. The poor deli is a mom and pop store and is trashed inside with no windows and fire damage. The owners say so far that they think they can rebuild based on what the fire department told them. Hopefully they aren't down for the count for too long 🤞

Unsure what to do for Beltane, so I lit a candle outdoors and carried it inside and lit incense and another candle that I'll let burn for as long as it goes.

Maybe I will go sit under a tree later today

Every time I think about keeping a practice centered on local nature I remind myself to start researching local plants.

Coincidentally the South Seattle Emerald just published an article about local springtime foraging for the Seattle area

I recently read Diana Paxson's book "Essential Asatru." As always, I enjoy Diana's writing and learning more about the reconstructinst side of Norse religion.

It was also definitely a reminder that while I tend to focus on the Norse deities and myths, I'm not much of a reconstructionist. I tend to prefer to be a bit more inventive. And maybe even a tad syncretic. Enough to annoy most of the reconstructionists out there, I suspect. 🙃

I suppose some Asatruar would probably write me off as "Wiccatru." (Though I find that ironic, since I'm not really into a lot of the liturgical elements most people associate with Wicca either.) So I do appreciate Paxson's comments on that:

"I doubt that the gods themselves care about the style in which they are worshipped, though I believe that they can be more completely understood and perceived more clearly when honored in a Germanic cultural context."

Granted, I think my main difference between me and the reconstructionists is that I'm not as interested in getting quite so close to the "original intent" or "original practice."

For example, Paxson encourages people to use ancient Scandinavian or other Germanic rhythms and rhyme patterns for their prayers to the gods and I just don't think that's necessary.

Plus I'm interested in exploring, reinterpreting, and retelling the myths. Reconstructionists seem to be all about strict adherence to some "original meaning." At least that's the impression go get.

And in some ways, I get the reconstructionist impulse. After all, the old ways were taken from us (or in some cases, abandoned by us) and even corrupted. So I get wanting to try to recover that. But at the same time, any tradition needs to grow if it's going to continue to live.

And to some degree I think reconstructionists understand that too. But we seem to differ on where we think the balance between connecting to the old and growing it into something know should lie.

@Cat_LeFey @jarredh This is all so interesting. I’m still new to all of this, but as I explore more, it’s really hard to shake the white supremacist / Christian / western idea of doing things the “right way” when I start researching and reading.

Bringing old ideas and looking to how things also evolved naturally seems pretty important to make a more living tradition and spirituality since so much has changed and been lost. It’s all so nuanced and I definitely see the “there’s no right way” and also “maybe some guidelines” are all at play IMO.

I've always said that us Pagans are a well-read bunch, and I think that's really cool. However, all those ‘required reading’ lists can be a huge barrier to newcomers. One shouldn't have to read 10-15 books, including difficult ancient manuscripts, just to be a Pagan.

In the US, 54% of adults read below a 6th grade level (About 12 years old). 46% of Americans didn't read a single book last year. Not everyone is literate, and our community should be inclusive of that.

poweredbylemonx,
@poweredbylemonx@pagan.plus avatar

@Cat_LeFey Yeah, the amount of research that it feels like is needed is a huge barrier.

For me I've been doing a lot of reading because of my personal religious trauma and also, admittedly, I still have a bit of "Am I doing this right?" feelings and just a general need to really check things out before I dive in.

It would be nice to have simple, intro or 101 type things that are accessible. Maybe a Paganism 101 zine or comic 🤔

I'm looking for advice on preparing potting soil prior to planting. I know there are fungus and gnats that can cause issues that can be treated. What else should I be considering prior to planting? :ReplyOK:

poweredbylemonx,
@poweredbylemonx@pagan.plus avatar

@Crazypedia If you're looking specifically to avoid fungus gnats it can help to mix in some Mosquito Bits (aka *Bacillus thuringiensis v. israelensis) *pellets.

It is a bacteria that stops the larva from developing, but it's harmless to plants. It's also something you can apply to a plant later by putting it in the water, but this tends to be a lot more tedious since you usually need to water the plant several times to get rid of an infestation.

It's easier to avoid altogether if you can by prepping soil properly.

Also remember the standard NPK rule (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) since plants need nutrients. The rule of thumb is that Nitrogen is for stem and leaf growth, Phosphorus is for building blooms. That's about all I know from the gardening class I just took 😅
