While I’m sure that one-click hosting for fediverse instances exist, I’d imagine most instance admins would be using general dedicated server hosting. It would allow for finer control of the backend.

I don’t think it’s about limiting the sail area, we got really really good at filling a mast with a shitload of sails. I’d say it’s more likely they’d get in the way of cargo un/loading. Or heaven forbid, take up space for containers.

I think you were able to turn the setting on for this a fair while ago even if it didn’t support your region yet. Because I’m not on the beta and these started just working for me about a week and a half ago. I checked the support doc at the time and it didn’t say Australia yet so I was pretty confused.

Maybe I was part of some early A/B testing? It doesn’t seem like there was an OS update to enable it, I’m still on 16.5 not 16.5.1. The API probably updated and the app just processes that data for whatever regions it gets sent it for.

Was waiting for Narwhal to break and it never happened. Turns out the dev got a deal to not pay anything until he can release a ‘Narwhal 2’ that’s subscription only. Wasn’t an Apollo user but the dev got shafted and reddit didn’t offer anything close to what the Narwhal dev did. Still deleted my account as planned and deleted their app off my phone.

Memmy and Mlem are both native 3PAs based on Apollo. They both have test flight betas, but they’re also both full currently. Memmy has been submitted for app store approval though and should be available soon.

Honestly this seems to be an issue with Jerboa caused by the developer. I’m using the Mlem beta on iOS and the dev added support for the 0.18.0 API, but didn’t remove support for the 0.17.x API version. It seems like a user unfriendly choice to break support in this way when so many instances haven’t updated yet. Fair enough to not support them both indefinitely, but it’s going to be really frustrating for both users and server admins if this happens every major update going forward.

I've been a subscriber of r/badwomensanatomy for a really long time and can vouch for the fact that I've always felt safe there as a trans woman.

I joined this particular instance because it felt like a safe space to be, and I think that should be one of the biggest considerations when migrating a community like yours.

I think Kobold's concerns about spambots are valid to raise, but as it stands there hasn't been any issues with bots on this instance. I pretty firmly believe the admin's here would take steps when needed to stop spambots and bad actors, as they seem committed to making sure it remains safe.

I think the lower barrier to entry for people is more important at the start like you said, and simplifies things by having an instance you trust to direct your users too. You don't want them wandering onto an instance that won't moderate/defederate malicious and harmful content.
