@protonprivacy I really want to migrate from Gmail to ProtonMail, but unfortunately my ProtonMail account was temporarily disabled. I have been without my email for days, pleasehelp. I have answered all of the questions that you have asked me and it has been radio silence. This morning I received a fully copied/pasted email asking me to answer the same exact questions again. Questions such as: Have you used the account to subscribe to other services? If so, please list a few of them.

"Earlier this year, the Spanish police Guardia Civil sent legal requests through Swiss police to and , which are both based in Switzerland. (..)

Wire responded providing the email address used to register the Wire account, which was a Protonmail address.

@protonprivacy responded providing the recovery email for that Protonmail account, which was an iCloud email address, according to the documents."

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER @anneroth Note that the user's data remains perfectly secure - no legal request can bypass the encryption we use to protect the users' data: https://proton.me/blog/zero-access-encryption.

The recovery address that was provided in this case is an optional recovery method, which the user could have omitted (or used a different one, not the Apple ID).

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER It protects the content of your inbox, i.e. prevents us, and therefore any third parties (authorities included) from accessing it. We protect our users' data not by refusing to comply (which is not possible for any legally operating company anyway) but by not having access to the users' content.

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER The name/address of the terrorism suspect was actually given to police by Apple, not Proton. The terror suspect added their real-life Apple email as an optional recovery address in Proton Mail. Proton can't decrypt data, but in terror cases Swiss courts can obtain recovery email.

Setting a recovery email is optional, and you can read about other recovery methods here: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER We also provide an official Proton Mail onion site for use with the Tor Network for those seeking anonymity.

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER We also provide an onion site for anonymous access (we are one of the only email providers that supports this).

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@AndyGER No legally operating company can refuse to comply with the local legislation. What we can do (and do all the time) is keep all the user data that can be kept inaccessible, inaccessible to us. Therefore, we cannot share it even when presented with a legal data request we have no grounds to contest.

@protonprivacy works with the authorities and the result is an arrest of a Spanish activist.

This is not the first time this has happened and it will not be the last.

However, we still believe that Proton Mail is a good e-mail service but it should be known that just because Proton is a privacy based company does not mean they are going to protect you when they are served with a court order.

Hey @protonprivacy you still manage to amaze me with how bad your applications are designed. On Android, you can't change the auto-uploaded folder without having photo backup turned on and photo backup won't turn on if it can't find the auto-upload folder...

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@benjistokman Hi Ben! The photo backup indeed needs to be turned on to be able to add and/or remove folders from which you will be backing up your photos.

If perhaps we've misunderstood you, please let us know.

protonprivacy,
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar

@benjistokman Can you please let us know if you're seeing any error messages or is the option simply greyed out in your app settings? Could you send us a screenshot of what you're seeing?

What device model/Android OS version are you using, and what is your Proton Drive version installed on the device?

Bon.

Proton Pass Browser extension 2-FA Generator buggy.

Stick with your mobile both for adding secret key and generating TOTP.

...for the next seven or so years, I mean.

...until they even realize that this is a bug and that bugs are supposed to be fixed, I mean.

Wondering how flawless the new Bitwarden free extension and app in co parison works. Is also e2e zero knowledge encrypted.

@kompromat Hi! Can you let us know what's buggy about the 2FA generator? Are you using the Chrome or Firefox browser extension? Are you getting codes generated as expected in the extension, but the generated codes aren't accepted on login on the websites where you're using 2FA?

@sjoel No, login IP addresses are not logged by default, and yes, using Tor or a no-logs VPN like Proton VPN would effectively hide your real IP address. You can learn how to use Proton Mail more anonymously here: https://proton.me/blog/use-protonmail-anonymously
