When I talk about digital privacy, there is always some smug genius who shrugs and tells me, "Who cares? We all know we don't have any privacy anyway." Nothing could be more wrong. Convincing you that the fight is already over to the way people in power get you to stop resisting.

Hey @protonprivacy you still manage to amaze me with how bad your applications are designed. On Android, you can't change the auto-uploaded folder without having photo backup turned on and photo backup won't turn on if it can't find the auto-upload folder...

benjistokman,
@benjistokman@mast.benstokman.me avatar

@protonprivacy I can't turn that on if the default folder doesn't exist on my system.

I was today years old when I learned "parking" literally used to refer to civic green space lining the roads

So every time you say parking you're directly referencing a thing that was lost during the automobile's aggressive and costly takeover of public spaces

Does this book exist?

"How Universities Lost the Internet"

or has someone done research on this topic? That is, the fact that many North American universities have ceded all technical capacity to Microsoft, Google, etc?

It used to be students could get web hosting, email, and even some cool experimental online stuff through their schools. Now every online communication channel is locked down.

benjistokman,
@benjistokman@mast.benstokman.me avatar

@rwg The Internet was literally given to corporations in the 90s.

And the shift to using these services is because everyone is using email, calendars, meetings, etc. -- not just geeky people who know how to actually use a computer.

the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

    Twitter / X hasn’t hidden view metrics for livestreams like they did for video

    here’s Elon Musk with Netanyahu, which Musk promoted numerous times today

    327k video views vs. 3.4 million post views

    video views are less than 10% of the public post views (impressions) metric

    Find of the day - someone dropped an AtlasVPN on Reddit. The AtlasVPN daemon on Linux runs an HTTP server to accept CLI commands, it binds to 127.0.0.1:8076 by default.

    What's hilarious is that it accepts commands without ANY authentication - so if you open a malicious webpage, that webpage can fire a POST to 127.0.0.1:8076/connection/stop and instantly disconnect your VPN.

    Utter garbage.

    Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/cybersecurity/comments/167f16e/atlasvpn_linux_client_103_remote_disconnect/

    Proof below - used AtlasVPN's latest Linux client, version 1.0.3.

    AtlasVPN 1.0.3 0day demonstration where I start their VPN client, connect, and confirm my IP is now hidden. I then visit a malicious page that disconnects me from AtlasVPN, revealing my original IP.

    @bohemianchic the best thing is that it’s literally copyright infringement. A machine doesn’t have the human authorship needed to get copyright for derivative works.
