Spotify take the prize for absurd corporate greed. They raise subscription prices and declare that tracks with less than 1,000 streams a year get NOTHING. This is a significant loss to people like me who have over 200 tracks online, but not all get a large audience. They still deserve to earn.

The Twitter paradigm, menus and lines of text is really tired. You graphic novelists should get together and make a text chat that looks like a graphic novel. Multiple avatars would show an emotion expressed by a post. Threaded posts could look like a page of a graphic novel.

Someone should mock that up and see what it looks like using any existing platform on the Fediverse.

Mastodon has "brand recognition". The rest of the fediverse is a mystery to those who don't take the time to learn what it is.
Would you like to live in Paris? Or would Saint-Germain-en Laye be a captivating destination for you? To know, you'd have to look it up and do some research. The two are connected by light rail. Get it? Connection, federation, same idea. I have no idea how the train works, I just know I can go between the two places. Living in Paris, I may never have heard of S-G-e-L.

https://fediverse.fans is an attempt to offer lists of accounts by their declared interests. You can add yourself, modify or delete anytime. The FediRoster software is by @julian who also got it started.

Take a look, do a search for "linux" or "music" or whatever floats your boat. Check the accounts of interest and download the file. Go to preferences/import-export and import those accounts.
Or - if you're very new, download thre whole list & remove those that aren't interesting to you.

If you are into graphic design of any kind, what places might one shop for graphics for album covers (which are always square). The music I create has no chance of justifying $50 or more for a cover design. I'd consider buying existing work for small fees. Know that a track streamed 1,000 time might earn $3.50, so it's hard to pay for graphics.

In 4 days, Threads will become available in the EU. I was able to see it for a day or two initially and found it to be like Instagram. I used IG and FB as a presence for my music. I left both because they wasted too much time with almost no return. If and when Threads is able to federate with Mastodon, it could be a way for me to talk to the handful of friends I have there. Many don't use email, so if I don't have their phone number to text, it's radio silence. One interesting thing is ->

I walked by a nursing home and saw people sitting at tables, kind of looking at I don't know what.

Next I was in a medical waiting room with 15 people, 13 of them of all ages were scrolling on phones.

Listening to older SF books I probably read (Simak, Silverberg, Anderson, etc) . I was a teen, then young adult. Man, that shit is Slllloooooooowwwwwww. They had time to spend two chapters describing the part of the planet that they didn't need to explore.

As I look through all the social networks (except Meta's), I ask myself what value-added people get from them. I know on Mastodon, I can count on some interesting things coming by on most days. Two of the places I visit are so echo chamber-y, I assume people feel their rants matter, but they don't. I just can't hang out long at a place without word filters. Even Twitter is tolerable with those! To see, day after day, same US election propaganda is intolerable. I already know who I vote for.

Different social networks attract different kinds of people, even when they all look a lot like Twitter. I know a few people who are on several, like me. I continue to maintain that Mastodon has more food for thought than the others and is more useful for getting answers. I honestly believe there's more sincerity here. Of course, it's partly because of the number of instances which bring a diversity of thought and lifestyle.
