Random question: is there a good open source tool out there for making animated vertical videos? Something that you could use for making Reels or Tiktok videos?

Preferably web-based?

If not, I might have an idea for stories 😅

I keep my filaments stored in vacuum sealed plastic bags. It is kind of a pain to deal with: a nuisance to open and reseal and storing them is far from neat or efficient.

I’m wondering if it is really worth the trouble except for a couple of really absorptive types. I often see photos where people store them in the open.

@RichiH @linux_mclinuxface @Ronguest measuring the weight of the water in your spool might work but wouldn’t be more helpful than general humidity in the bag. I got a 6 pack of sensors for like $10 and just keep them with the spools in their ziplocks. I also toss this in and it’s good to go whenever. I have a heatbox but mostly so so I don’t leave the spools in my humid basement overnight.

A spool of OVERTURE PETG 3D printer filament in black color with a humidity indicator displaying 27% I just used this spool.

I didn't really enjoy "The Three-Body Problem" book. Partly due to Deus ex machina that the author pulls to explain the mystery introduced, but mostly because it was completely toothless and pointless in the light of serious topics that it brought (especially the Cultural Revolution).

For whatever reason I had I decided to give the Netflix show a try, and... it is also pretty terrible, IMO! The first scene was directed rather well, and the acting was top notch (except for the girl…

I think I need to fork these instructions and go a little more reasonable number.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

Ok So I'm building a Mk4 3d printer. The gummy bears were a nice touch but the whole kit is amazing. The instructions are top notch too. Maybe I haven't done this a lot (I haven't) but docs like these take an incredible amount of work. Hats off to them.

"Step 10 Y-axis: geometry check" showed me just how warped both my desktops are. On an actual flat surface it doesn't rock at all, on my desk.. well I was very worried I had somehow warped this steal and aluminum frame with an allen wrench.

"Step 24 Mounting the xBuddy board"

The hanging of the power supply and the xBuddy (that is a silly name) is clever and I like it.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

The xBuddy itself is a sizable controller computer. Ethernet, 2... maybe 4 motor controller, heat bed controller, something called "power panic" (which I really want to know more about) and an lcd controller.

The xBuddy and a really cool old pair of scissors I slightly restored.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

Oh that's cool - power panic is litterally the system detecting a power loss, keeping enough power in it's caps to move the print head to a safe spot and writing the current progress to memory. If power restores fast enough it will just start printing once it's powered back on.

Even cooler prusa has a page full of videos about how to test each safety feature. This isn't something I've ever seen before in any equipment I've ever been around.

It's not a ton of safety features but I'm for it.

Whelp I got the y axis motor installed (they have you insert nuts into 3d printed parts and that's a neat trick) and I'm done! Only 6 more sections to go...

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

Fun fact, this thing has a Delta PSU. I'm very familiar with the name because specialty data center equipment I help develop are full of them.

(They're fine afaik, haven't seen a single one fail out of thousands of them.)

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

The X and y axis were fun to build. The X also carries the extruder. I’m enjoying the elegance of sticking hardware into 3D printed parts. The threaded black caps that travel on the y axis threaded rods is super cool too. I was like how on earth will I align this? The caps can screw in quarter turns!

reconbot,

I got the heating unit and electronics (loveboard?) attached. The amount of work that goes into this extruder is awesome. I would not have thought so much could go into such a small device.

@MLE_online my partners cat didn’t get out often but would disappear for 2-4 days every time she did. No idea where she would go but she’d always show up crying in the bush outside the house hungry and proud.

Fingers crossed Hobie comes home soon fat and happy. 🤞❤️

@tbeseda I've got a web dev question and I think your approach to web dev fits the kind of answer I'm looking for.

I've got a public contact form and it's getting spammed. In 2024 what's the best way to secure that?

Finished a port of a complex side project from to and I’m honestly quite happy.

  • Layouts are great, I had two failed ports to nextjs app directory. I’m not in love with remix’s route api but it works! I don’t have strange edge cases and there’s a js api escape hatch
  • loaders and actions are wonderful, I got rid of a whole ass api server. Having an actual request and response to work with is a breath of fresh air

@janl It somehow feels not very "professional" but I don't know what else to do without some 3rd party service like turnstile, which I bet 90% of doesn't have to be a service at all.
