What a shame. Best original scifi show since The Expanse. I will miss Scavengers Reign.

A common comment on this post was that I hadn't explained labour arbitrage clearly. Many thought I was making an argument against productivity or reusable code. So I added a section to better explain what I mean

"React, Electron, and LLMs have a common purpose: the labour arbitrage theory of dev tool popularity"

(Direct link to that section)

Your primary point is quite interesting. I’ve internalized so much of this I’m not sure I can see it yet. It’s a bit of a fish asking “What the hell is water?” Moment for me.

the russian & turkish baths in nyc have two owners, boris and david, who alternate weeks and you can only use your pass or gift card on the days the owner who sold them are working. for years their website has directed people to a glitch app to identify whose day it is: https://baths.glitch.me/

@jenn this is wild. I wonder if they have anything to do with the app

Observations, medication day #5. Something kicked into high gear and I am awestruck again. What is this amazingness. Control over hyperfocus; control starting, stopping, and moving to whatever needs it.

I'm back to having no words.

I still tend to babble irl, I chatterbox constantly at to and with coworkers.

(If you mix equal parts ryan reynolds and she-hulk together and pour out a slightly less clever git you'd have me.)

Kind of surprised that hasn't stopped but I'm OK with that.

So I finally finished reading The Expanse with book 9. It took me a while, as I'm generally not reading as much as I'd like to these days.

Anyway, I think it was a good end to the series. Really good, actually.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

@jens I really enjoyed it. I just reread it a few weeks ago. I want more stories in this universe, but I understand it’s come to an end. The novellas were quite wonderful too if you haven’t read them. The final one “Sins of our fathers” was soso but I might have just been mad it was over.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

@jens I still run into sci-fi nerd friends who haven’t heard of it much less read it. It’s wonderful actually the ones who go down that path they fall in love.

My favorite novella is probably The Churn about Amos

I read a about an ice hauler that gets suddenly sent out of the solar system at relativistic speeds on the back of something that apparently isn't a comet, it starts as a survival story and then turns really interesting and weird.

Do any of you know what I might be talking about?

Big thanks to @jcorbin for walking me through a ton of finer points of I've made my first model!

It's a little late for indie bookstore day but these are bookmarks for my local bookstore.

I'm testing a print in the only color PETG I've got, and will try a 2 color PLA in the morning. I think the inset one would look really good with the letters (and bottom of the bookmark) in black with a white top. 🤔

And if you're every nearby https://www.womrathbooks.com/ !

A sliced GCODE version of both bookmarks. I'm printing them in PETG at 1mm depth. We'll see how it goes :fingers crossed:
A photo of my printer starting it's print. Just some blue outlines for now.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

The model is good but the print isn’t what I’d like. I think I need a higher temp. I got a hardened nozzle and I haven’t dialed it in yet.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

I bumped the nozzle temp another 5 degrees and I think it’s pretty good now. I should do a temp tower tbh but I got toys to print.

Left is 260c middle is 255c and right is a completely different model at 255c. Hardened steel nozzle with PETG.

The difference between the top infills is staggering. I was experimenting for strength but they look so bad I’m not gonna consider them for the top. On the bottom the bed seems to melt them in a bit and smooth them out.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

I need to dial down the heat to stop these strings, it’s a pita to pull them out of the letters.

Also I leaned a bit about how to add color changes at the correct layers 😅

Random question: is there a good open source tool out there for making animated vertical videos? Something that you could use for making Reels or Tiktok videos?

Preferably web-based?

If not, I might have an idea for stories 😅

I keep my filaments stored in vacuum sealed plastic bags. It is kind of a pain to deal with: a nuisance to open and reseal and storing them is far from neat or efficient.

I’m wondering if it is really worth the trouble except for a couple of really absorptive types. I often see photos where people store them in the open.

reconbot,
@reconbot@toot.cafe avatar

@RichiH @linux_mclinuxface @Ronguest measuring the weight of the water in your spool might work but wouldn’t be more helpful than general humidity in the bag. I got a 6 pack of sensors for like $10 and just keep them with the spools in their ziplocks. I also toss this in and it’s good to go whenever. I have a heatbox but mostly so so I don’t leave the spools in my humid basement overnight.

A spool of OVERTURE PETG 3D printer filament in black color with a humidity indicator displaying 27% I just used this spool.

I didn't really enjoy "The Three-Body Problem" book. Partly due to Deus ex machina that the author pulls to explain the mystery introduced, but mostly because it was completely toothless and pointless in the light of serious topics that it brought (especially the Cultural Revolution).

For whatever reason I had I decided to give the Netflix show a try, and... it is also pretty terrible, IMO! The first scene was directed rather well, and the acting was top notch (except for the girl…

The X and y axis were fun to build. The X also carries the extruder. I’m enjoying the elegance of sticking hardware into 3D printed parts. The threaded black caps that travel on the y axis threaded rods is super cool too. I was like how on earth will I align this? The caps can screw in quarter turns!

I got the heating unit and electronics (loveboard?) attached. The amount of work that goes into this extruder is awesome. I would not have thought so much could go into such a small device.
