Today in our game we digressed quite a bit but that's ok. The Cell sans the Doomsayer who is currently obsessed with the stained glass window he's creating decided to go to Halos and Den Hades about the Z'bri's demand for the heartstone back. Halos laid out who the Z'bri is, a powerful Sangis count named Eshlazi, revealing its actually the current occupant of the heartstone. Somehow Eshlazi has awoken his spirit and found a way to reach out from inside the stone./1

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

Halos said Eahlazi is too powerful to defeat directly. It can't be allowed to escape and the stone can't be destroyed. But someone can enter the River of Dream physically and from there enter the heartstone and put Eshlazi back to sleep. Those someones are the Cell. They are going to meet Halos at Veruka's Tower the following night. /2

I'm staying near the airport for , and originally I was going to rent a car. But then I thought about it. I'm like 15 minutes away from the convention center. Aside from the expense of the rental, I'd need parking for 4 days for a car that's just going to sit there for 12+ hours.

I can just take the shuttle from the airport to the hotel, and take a Lyft to the convention and back. It would likely save at least a couple hundred bucks.

Arrrggg. Trying to order from Memory Express. To place my order they need the address I'm shipping to be on my credit card.

But I don't trust my apartment's delivery system, I've had multiple packages never arrive. So I want to ship it to someone I know with a house.

Their website claims you can add an address by phoning your credit card company, but when I do that they say you need to visit the store in person.

Fucking hell.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Canageek CL is memory related.

But yeah this is why the last computer I built was over ten years ago.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Canageek Yeah those shipping practices are supposed to be prevent fraud. Fun fact: when I worked for UPS I helped bust a Gateway computer (those ones in the cow boxes from the 90s) computer fraud ring. We kept getting boxes from Gateway going to the same apartment but with different names. Way too many for that many people to live there. The crooks were using stolen credit card numbers but were sending the computers to their own address.

@Canageek It's why a lot of people go for bare bones computers or kits, because they're supposed to be tested for compatibility and some companies burn them in. When I worked for a computer builder once I moved up I was doing compatibility testing for the barebones PCs and kits we were selling.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Canageek Yeah you can only pack so much stuff into a tiny box and keep it all from melting. Also I suspect it's a symptom of approaching the limits of Moore's Law, so chip and component manufacturers have to manipulate increasingly minute characteristics that narrow their compatibility. Gone are the times of just grabbing a handful of RAM and a Pentium 4 and some graphics card and 9 times out of 10 it's all compatible.

I have my badge for and the hotel booked, but I still haven't booked my flight. It's gotten so byzantine with fees for all kinds of choices. Just let me book a fucking flight, have a seat on the plane, bring my carry-on, and check a bag for one fee without anything additional added.

Y’know, maybe i’m thinking backwards about blogging. Often, I write a thread and it removes my impetus to blog, because the idea is already ‘out there’.

But finding historical threads, in ANY platform, is an absolute shitshow. Maybe I should ignore my “nobody wants to hear this shit twice” instinct and think about lift and shifting threads into blog posts, if only so I can FIND them later.

Huh.

@rdonoghue Please, write more blog posts. I'll read them.

Woot, got a couple of badges repaired and back on my bag. Now to find the sewing kit and get my coffin drop patch onto my jacket.

Almost 54 years old, totally a professional, and still doing pins and patches.

I found some bar pins that seem to work great for fixing my broken buttons. I just pulled out the broken pins and used JB Weld to stick the bar pins on.

TTRPG Project Journal: Today I wrote up a rec post, wrote out new (experimental) social rules for Protect the Child, figured out Rotted Capes character creation and started re-formatting my Rotted Capes Google Sheets. I'm realizing that I struggle to learn code unless I'm learning how to input functions into a project I care about.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@mintrabbit I've been writing code and scripts of one kind or another for over 20 years in a professional capacity, and I only ever learn any of it when it applies to something I'm working on.

I swear its weird how internet tracking works. My wife was telling myself and a mutual friend about the album "I glued my balls to my butthole again". Now a couple of days later, with no searches by me on any device, it shows up in my YouTube suggestions.

@scalzi I love my Pixel Slate but I wish Google would make the onscreen keyboard more usable because the folio keyboard died like three days after the warranty expired. My phone's keyboard works better than the Slate's.

Decided to make a space here on mastodon.social. Zero "real" issues with Vivaldi's instance but they're a bit more cautious with adult content than I'd like so this seems simpler and kinda the ultimate baseline generic instance to join.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@targrus One issue with mastodon.social is many smaller instances have it muted (dice.camp does, which is why I had to approve the follow request) or blocked outright. I'll see your posts because of the mutual follows, but nobody on dice.camp who doesn't follow you will.

On this day 42 years ago my dad wrote a cheque and posted it to a small computer company in Cambridge. NINE weeks later my Sinclair ZX Spectrum arrived. Two days after that I tripped over the power cable and blew the ULA. It was six weeks before the replacement arrived. I was very careful after that. #ZXSpectrum

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@mrpjevans Our first Atari was fried by a power outage from an electrical storm on Christmas morning, mere hours after hooking it up. Federated Group, a now defunct electronics chain, replaced it because they didn't have a return policy (yet) that excluded running computers during storms without a surge protector . We didn't even know was a surge protector was.
