I do love how many lore errors can be fixed by saying "....and that person is bad at geography/history" WHICH IS TOTALLY VALID.

When I was in high school in 2002 I knew someone who had only just learned Afghanistan is in the middle east, and not South America.

Otherwise smart people will make stupid mistakes like saying south when they mean north, or will do some quick mental math with dates and make a mistake.

(Yes, I've been reading someone doing a deep dive into MtG lore)

Derek Lowe's "Things I Will Not Work With", a series about insanely dangerous chemical compounds.

In this episode, The Higher States of Bromine.

graphics research lifehack: you can cut out a ton of paywall scams and inscrutable academic wankery by excluding "we present" from your searches

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva Chemistry has been fighting with that problem for decades, if not longer. It is hard to get negative results published, and even if you do, you aren't going to get cited, as what will people say?

"We didn't use the reaction described in citation 18, as we read the paper and found out it didn't work."

Canageek,

@aeva Oh true; Derek Lowe did some really good blog posts on the topic about ten years ago, wish I could find them now

[serious, no joke replies or guesses / autotranslation please]

do I know anyone native or otherwise very fluent in Chinese who can tell me the correct term for a plated edge connector, like you might find on a PCIe card? specifically the "gold fingers" style connector feature you would find on the PCB side, not the plastic connector it slots into.

I've had an absolute nightmare trying to communicate this feature to a Shenzhen-based PCB vendor and I would like it to be easier in future.

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@gsuberland is this a common feature? I know some native Chinese speakers I could send this to for you, but their chemists and as far as I know have never done PCB design so they might not know. but I can ask if you'd like.

On rap beef:
J Cole wrote an anti-diss track but y'all didn't like that one, huh? He opted out of this little "provoke each other until real violence happens" game that y'all are enjoying so much. He made a smart decision.

For those that don't listen to rap:
Drizzy is a nickname for Drake.
Jigga is Jay Z.
Kodak is Kodak Black.

J Cole refused to engage in the "Old rappers suck! / new generation of rappers suck!" debates. He refused to get drawn into rap battles. Instead he compliments everyone.

Screenshot of lyrics: I'm dead in the middle of two generations I'm little bro and big bro all at once Just left the lab with young 21 Savage I'm 'bout to go and meet Jigga for lunch Had a long talk with the young brother Kodak Reminded me of young brother from 'Ville Straight out the projects, no fakin', just honest I wish that he had more guidance, for real Too many brothers in cycle of jail Spending they birthdays inside of a cell We coming from a long bloodline of trauma We raised by our mamas, Lord we gotta heal We hurting our sisters, the babies as well We killing our brothers, they poisoned the well Distorted self image, we set up to fail I'ma make sure that the real gon' prevail, brother

@mekkaokereke Question: Is it rare for rappers to come out against attacking one another like this?

as someone who has lived in both the US and EU i think the standard date formats are confusing as fuck and everyone should switch to ISO 8601 yyyy-mm-dd

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@eniko this this this this

there's a reason I write a note at the top of every log book telling people to use this date format because as a Canadian University we get a buttload of people up from the US and I never know which one any given person is going to use and it can matter if I'm trying to figure out when a problem on an instrument started

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@xgranade @eniko the advantage of using ISO is if you're using them as file or folder names sorting by date is really slow, but sorting by file name is super fast and it will sort automatically if you use ISO

Arrrggg. Trying to order from Memory Express. To place my order they need the address I'm shipping to be on my credit card.

But I don't trust my apartment's delivery system, I've had multiple packages never arrive. So I want to ship it to someone I know with a house.

Their website claims you can add an address by phoning your credit card company, but when I do that they say you need to visit the store in person.

Fucking hell.

Canageek,

Graphics card I picked is sold out. That one is easy, just swap in another with the same chip.

But the motherboard is sold out, and so I'm left sifting through a pile of almost identical ones, trying to find one with the right front headers without paying through the nose.

I think I've found one, and then find it needs CL34 RAM instead of CL30, and I have no idea what that means.

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@rivetgeek Yeah, so I have to figure if it is worth using a motherboard that doesn't support CL30 RAM or if I pay more.

Or possibly I buy the motherboard from another company then the rest.

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@rivetgeek Things seem to have gotten a LOT worse in the last 10 years, I didn't have to check things NEARLY this carefully last time I built one. The increased power demand seems to have messed things up

discovering that fewer cybertrucks have been sold than Sinclair C5s has amused me greatly. and honestly, if you want to drive a weird vehicle, the C5 is far more fun.

Considering how hard it is to catch birds— I think one “in the hand” would be worth a lot more than two in the bush. Pica agrees with much enthusiasm (and isn’t allowed outside alone because of it)—

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@futurebird I want to see a survey of ornithologist now to work out how MANY birds in the bush one in the hand is worth, sorted by sub-field (since I could see the answer being very different for the person that studies eagles vs songbirds)

Looking for a lot of words that expresses that something is cool. Like, "Awesome", "Groovy", "Cowabunga". It doesn't matter how made-up or weird, or obscure. I'm gonna need like a hundred of them!

Feel free to suggest any, together with a number indicating the coolness (1 = ok, 3 = Great!, 5 = THAT'S AWESOME, 10 = INFINITY COOL)

    @aetataureate oh I can tell you that, we just really get sick of typing incredibly long scientific terms over and over again. I don't use abbreviations like that, because I use latex and just set up a macro with a short form, but behind the scenes I'm typing \aur\ instead of auraphilic and \cp\ instead of writing out coordination polymer every time.

    Podbean is a great app! it is the only music player I've ever used that randomly stops playing every 20 minutes for no reason.

    I had a better experience with Winamp back in 1998 and it would periodically skip because I didn't have enough CPU to use it and Internet Explorer at the same time

    you know, you never really know how good you have it in contemporary programming languages until you have to slog through things in a dialect of basic for some reason (mostly screwing around on https://telehack.com)

    feeling like a genius for getting anything done, but also i'm already at the point of wanting to make a build system for a better language to compile to this

    Canageek,
    @Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

    @kit Be glad you aren't using C64 Basic. My Dad told me about using it. Variable names could only be two letters, but you could have arrays, so for a lot of things you had to put unrelated things into an array, just to have enough variable names.
