I'm seeing a lot of my fellow Gen-Xers saying "When did we start thinking the police were the bad guys?"

Did you not come up on Fuck the Police? On Killing in the Name?

Or is this only because now that you have your little bit of shit and feel entitled that you want to remake it? To be safe for you, instead of strong for them? To become the generation we hated for not protecting us?

These kids are doing what we did. Being who we wanted to be. Help them, don't shit on them. Fucking cowards.

rivetgeek,

@miriamrobern @thebrand Yeah, it baffles me and is super weird.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen @thebrand Myself and the few of my peers I'm still good friends with were never on the conservative side, and took much of the anti-establishment ethos of our high school years deeply to heart even if we wound up being boring old dudes. The ones who turned into raging MAGA chuds were just like us, going to the same clubs and listening to the same music and wearing lipstick and eyeliner and skirts. That's why it's so damn baffling.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen @thebrand Like when I was 20 I was muttering "Fuck the Police" when cops were profiling me as I walked down the street. I kind of never stopped. Somewhere along the way, the same people who would have done the same are slapping Punisher stickers on their lifted trucks. No idea WTF happened to them.

Saw someone claim that games didn't use to have political content. Seems like bollocks. Final Fantasy 7? Too many to name? I think people just didn't notice because they were kids and controversy stirring was less of a thing.

Back then it was mainly outsiders being upset about games perhaps? I remember Commando Libya, Cannon Fodder and also the whole satanism panic...

rivetgeek,

@androidarts Even the game that became Monopoly was political...

For the most part, I'm glad I waited until my mid-30s to have kids, but having a 6-year old at almost 48 leads to a special kind of exhaustion!

@Tim_Eagon Preach! Our son is almost 10 now, I was 44 when he was born. Way different experience than when I was in my mid-20s or 30s.

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?
1/3

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Edent It's a scam the tries to overload the bank account holder with decisions in the hope they just go along with it.

I understand why currency bills have security features (to defeat counterfeiters.) What I don't get is why so many treasuries and national banks advertise their security features. It feels like they're just telling would-be counterfeiters what new hardware to buy to pull it off.

Am I missing something?

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@johnwsheldon @valthonis Also I think the strategy is that by layering the various security features it forces counterfeiters to concentrate on just one or two to try to replicate. It's gotten complex enough that they can't reproduce all of them. The absence of one is easier to notice than the presence of the others.

What game was hardest for you to wrap your head around? I've seen a lot of people struggle with Mage and Burning Wheel, as examples. What about you? What was hard for you to grasp? Or what has been hard for your players in the past?

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@thoughtpunks I think it might be PbtA. Not that I don't get how most PbtA games I've read are supposed to work. It's just that the core loop isn't intuitive to me.

I had to go to Wal-Mart (I know), and someone asked the cashier about the self-check area being closed while she was ringing me up. She said they were taking them out because of too much theft. I said, "It's for the best. If you see someone shoplifting, oh no you didn't". She wasn't amused.

Flight booked for . I realized that with the time difference I was looking at outbound times wrong. So I booked a flight on Tues night that arrives Weds morning. It's practically the same as when I went to Indy a few years ago, just from a different airport. Flight to Denver, deplane, get on another flight to Indy. As long as I can crash after I get to the hotel I'll be good.

Scientists on the Whale-SETI team have successfully communicated with a humpback whale named Twain, having a 20-minute “conversation” with the aquatic animal. This historic experiment involved a recorded whale call that the team played into the ocean using an underwater speaker, which led Twain to circle their boat and respond using a “greeting signal.” The exchange lasted for 20 minutes, and Twain would match the interval variations from the team’s calls, indicating that the two parties were indeed communicating with each other.

Here is the culmination of all the silly questions I've been asking about dogs. I've probably mis-assigned half the breeds, and the stats may not really make sense. Still, the basic framework seems right to me base on my interactions with dogs.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@armadajosh Funny thing is that labradors have one of the highest bite forces of any dog. Our labradoodle could crush bone if he wanted (luckily he's well trained). He's like a bite+1 bork+2.

rivetgeek,

@armadajosh For sure, at least partially. Ours is 85 lbs which is on the big end. To quote my boss, "Jesus Christ, that's a big dog".
