I collect these. I call them "design in the wild" where end users fix design mistakes on their own. It's a bit shocking how often this happens. Think of how bad it has to be to reach this point.

@scottjenson wouldn't the door have just opened before you lock it? There are only two states. Meaning whatever it was when you entered is unlocked.

day 783

I decided to give a static grass applicator, which I was gifted by Secret Santa, a test run.

be warned, the results were shocking!

My wife said 'I'll be expecting loud swearing soon'.

Alt text holds opinions.

I found the charging wire was too light and didn't contact the mesh sufficiently. I weighted it and then tested it. Then I zapped myself HARD.

Reader, loud swearing ensued.

Put it away for the day.

Cheap screw on lid with hole with metal mesh hot-glued in. Christ, they sell this on Amazon but I bet making one from stuff in my shed will even undercut the fellas on AliExpress and Temu
Static cup with infinitely more static grass being static and standing to attention on the inside than I saw on the bases at any moment on glued surfaces.

roofuskit,
@roofuskit@mstdn.social avatar

@erikcats I bought myself one of these a while back from AliExpress. They're the handle to a bug zapper racket with the grass bucket strapped on instead. I never got mine to actually charge the static grass up. But I always meant to give it another shot. Let me know if you have any success.

roofuskit,
@roofuskit@mstdn.social avatar

@erikcats most of the DIY ones I see are built this way. They start with the bug zapper fly swatter, chop off the grid and add the mesh. One lead is connected to the mesh and the other to a longer lead for attaching to the target. I wonder if maybe they cheaped out on the boost circuit.

@roofuskit@mstdn.social avatar

@erikcats ok, I found our problem and dummy me should have known better. I grew up with electronics as a hobby. These have a high voltage boost circuit and what we need is a negative ion generator like in air purifiers or electrostatic paint sprayers. I found one cheap on Amazon and I'm just going to replace the guts of this thing. I'll update when I'm done.

Book count is a little inflated this year due to all the Expanse novelas. But even discounting those, it's been one of my best years in quite some time. Took most of the year off from non-fiction which made it easier to really chew through some good novels. Still wishing I had more time for reading, but such is life.

Hey indigenous folk, we’re here to destroy your life. Thank you so much for agreeing to be a Green Sacrifice Zone. We promise, we'll use the lithium wisely.

Disposable e-cigarettes: UK 18-fold increase recorded between January 2021 and April 2022. Within 15 months, their popularity among 18-year-olds rose from 0.4% to 54.8%. Around 1.3 million disposable e-cigarettes are thrown away in the UK every week, that’s about 10,000 kilograms of lithium wasted every year.

@gerrymcgovern I cannot believe we live in a world where throwing away lithium batteries is legal. The amount of environmental destruction that goes into every device warrants mandatory recycling.

I am suspicious of Dune3

I'm here for it ... buuttt the timing of it being greenlit sounds like it's been greenlit as a promotional thing. I'm not angry or anything.

roofuskit,
@roofuskit@mstdn.social avatar

@paintgoblin The director did say in interviews after the first one that he had planned 3 movies. Greenlighting it this early gets the ball rolling on a series that has been heavily delayed by both the pandemic and strikes. If part 2 doesn't do well they can still cancel it, but if it does well they're ahead of the game.

This secret christmas gift for my wife is almost finished, so here is a sneaky WIP!

Trying to decide if I'm brave enough to attempt tattoos on Edward's skin, and if the leather is too blue, and if the skin is too blotchy, and on and on 😅

Let me know what you think! I feel it's pretty close!

Hey you delicious brain trust nerdlings, does any one of you know where to get brown stuff (aluminium putty, polyamide putty) if one wishes to avoid giving money to GSW?

Please retoot if you don't know!

roofuskit,
@roofuskit@mstdn.social avatar

@erikcats try searching for "kneadatite brown" or "kneadatite aluminum" add the extra "i" for Europe.

I just bought 16 ounces of Golden high flow titanium white in a single go because the stuff is a fucking dream for light mapping and zenithals. Goes through my airbrush first time, every time, no fucking about, and Jerry's sells a 16 ounce bottle for $34, when hobby air paints are on the order of 10-12 per oz.

I was tempted to grab a gallon, an even more ridiculous deal, but most of it would probably go bad.

roofuskit,

@NinjaDebugger be vigilant with respiratory protection when spraying Golden paints. There are still heavy metals in many of their pigments.
