I live in #DurhamNC & I spend a lot of time thinking about #synthdiy / #eurorack -- my dayjob is in tech because I'm a walking stereotype.

I'm leftist, anti-fascist, pro-LGBTQIA+++, pro-BIPOC, anti-TERF/SWERF, bored with "free speech" arguments, and I believe all cops are bastards.

Currently living on a single-user instance running #Akkoma and trying to decide whether to massively hack the web UI or just wait for one of the various frontends to get pretty enough to satisfy me.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Look, I get that the average life expectancy in the western world shot up enormously over the past 100 years. But that wasn’t supposed to be a green light for the chemical industry to conceal evidence that their products are deadly. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/05/27/3m-forever-chemicals-pfas-pfos-toxic

goddddamnit it's one thing when a delivery person is in a hurry or whatever & lies & says they tried to deliver but I wasn't home -- I get that.

But the goldang USPS carrier went to the trouble of filling out the coral "sorry we missed you" form, including my name & address & everything, and left it in my mailbox WHEN I WAS SITTING HERE IN MY APARTMENT ALL AFTERNOON.

Gotta love living in a timeline in which a major party presidential candidate gives an unhinged interview in Time magazine, and his opponent’s campaign team immediately leaps into action to promote it because of how batshit it is.

rossgrady,

@grrrr_shark I mean politics throughout history has been driven in part by “did you hear what my opponent said” but it is more interesting in this instance because he said, among other things, that he would round up millions of people and put them in camps, and because those statements, and the promotion thereof, will work equally to the advantage of both campaigns.

Everything always comes down to turnout and I feel like traditionally, “one candidate is a sociopathic fascist” would have been viewed as depressing turnout on that candidate’s side — but I literally don’t know that it will.

I saw someone post on here about how some music went missing from one of their Spotify playlists & they're feeling burnt because they paid for it & now it's gone, and my dude, I hate to break it to you, but that has never been how Spotify works, ever.

My teams run some fairly central backend systems at <my employer>, and for years one of our mission statements has been "never be the reason <our employer> winds up on the front page of a major newspaper."

rossgrady,

@robryk I hear that! I hope that we've always been on the same page that it's about running as secure & reliable a platform as we can . . . and I think our SRE culture is strong enough that hopefully nobody misinterprets it as a statement about secrecy.

Of all the things I dislike about this trend of open-source companies switching to less permissive licenses, my most hated aspect is the inevitable FAQ:

"Q: How can I tell whether my usage would be classified as competing? A: Email us!"

This is profoundly un-serious & obnoxious, and going along with it in any way is just contributing to the problem.

rossgrady, to random

I think about this literally every day & not for good reasons :(

It is with a fair amount of regret that I must inform you that @protonmail ProtonDrive for MacOS is not fit for purpose, inasmuch as it can't actually deal with anyone trying to use the files that are in its sync folder.

rossgrady,

@protonmail and before anyone says anything: I never had this problem with Dropbox, even with the same number of files synced & the same set of use-cases.

I assume a decent proportion of the problem is ProtonDrive having to encrypt everything locally before it pushes it up, and that not playing well with the cloud storage APIs that MacOS provides to enable hooks into Finder & the filesystem.

I still don't want to go back to Dropbox, but for the time being I feel like my only recourse is to shift to working out of a non-synced folder & having my own rsync or something that runs periodically.

rossgrady,

@malte If I wanted to roll my own solution I'd have lots of options!

I pay Proton so I don't have to :(

Since then, it has been lead paint and lead water pipes. The major difference is that those vectors disproportionately affect lower income people, due to lack of resources and/or gov’t investment in remediation :(

I live in North Carolina, where sports betting is about to become fully legal.

The amount of money that the sports betting industry is spending to advertise this fact is staggering, and should be a pretty clear signal about who actually wins out in this scenario.

can somebody smarter than me help me understand why prepping seems to be such a popular hobby for Christofascists

rossgrady,

@xan Are you at the point on your journey where this factoid has become inescapable? Because: same here.

rossgrady,

@xan Me: studiously avoiding the fact that every Meshtastic YouTuber is wearing camo & walking around with a T-Echo in their chest pack . . .

rossgrady,

@xan Also I just wound up buying the printed cases from Rokland, where the flags are simply very strongly implied

Watching an episode of "Quark" from 1978. It's one of the many "Star Wars"-inspired TV series, this one a comedy that only ran from February to April that year after a pilot episode aired the year before. Starring Richard Benjamin as commander of a galactic sanitation (garbage) ship. I don't remember it at all. However, I found myself getting some actual LOLs very quickly. Hmm, who was behind this thing? Created by Buck Henry. Well, there you go. Need to watch more.

rossgrady,

@lauren They just popped up in my YT feed yesterday & I made the mistake of clicking on the first [pilot] episode, which was terrible, so I didn't get more than 10 minutes into it. I don't remember any of the details, but I absolutely remember the existence of a show called Quark with that premise, so I must've watched it at the time.

Today in FUCKED UP news, one of my buddies who used to work for Pitchfork just told me that anyone who was laid off from Pitchfork is barred from freelancing for any other Conde Nast publications.

I'm a big Mylar fan anyway -- he's a super nice guy -- but I'm especially psyched about today's video because it's dedicated to getting [me \ everyone] re-excited about a module that many of us already own, the Disting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8QmV-_ysyI

I was super tempted to set up a bsky PDS but then I saw in the docs that you have to join their admins Discord in order to get permission to federate, and my brain was like "read some docs, spin up some containers on a VPS? no problem. Join a Discord? FUCK THAT NOPE"

The fact that in the USA, they're also highly likely to be armed does not really change this equation. We gotta fight them now or we'll be fighting them later when they're way more entrenched :(

News just passed across Instagram that we’ve lost Dexter Romweber. Here he is with his dear sister Sara, who died a few years ago as well. Nobody defined Chapel Hill more than the Romweber clan. https://youtu.be/V0RccRaaXgA

Saved you a click: “ Admins, if you decide beforehand that you don’t want your instance to federate with Bluesky over the bridge, the domain to limit or block is bsky.brid.gy”

Also, fuck that guy. I’m not an idiot. If I want to federate with Bluesky I can do it myself.

Talk about burying the lede:

“Lenovo developed a feature demonstrated at CES that enables you to step away from a meeting and have a digital version of yourself remain in the meeting, blinking and nodding as others talk. To use it, simply walk away from the call. Lenovo AI will instantly replace you with a lifelike video avatar that others on the call won’t be able to tell is synthetic.“
