First of all, why do tech writers feel they need to be apologetic when criticizing bad technology decisions by Big Tech?

I don't see similar hedging when the piece is about the tech underdogs – say, small FLOSS projects. Being a vicious critic is then somehow okay?

Secondly, just embrace your inner Luddites. Luddites were not against all technology per se, they were against how technology was being used to abuse people:

A dubious idea I have about cutting curved dovetails so a box would look like an impossible dovetail box, but would in fact have the top open on an arc rather than a diagonal slide like most impossible dovetails.
The axis of rotation is the left corner, where there's a green line.

I am volunteering with a local registered charity as 'the tech guy', you know how it is.

They need laptops for the kids. They have a little donated 3d printer, but no computer to prepare print files. I can't really teach software development and 3d printing without student laptops, right?

I am searching for donations and options.

Remembering when I used to train young creative technologists, the first empowering episode was "make a website".

We would make an email account, then a git forge account, then put up some html for static hosting - easy!

Then gmail required a phone number, then gitlab required a credit card. That exercise is no longer possible to do easily and freely.

I personally feel strongly that all voting infrastructure should be Free and Open.
Seeing closed proprietary machines involved in counting votes in Toronto's municipal elections reduces my confidence significantly.
