What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

I haven’t used facebook for years, but I do use twitter a lot to check whats happening in my area. Same for instagram, but I am not using thread at all.

Cool!, but the fedi software is not just that (especially ones). There are:

  • Gotosocial -> a small server first fediverse-server apps. You can spun it with just $4 vps and get a dedicates instance with features comparable to Mastodon.
  • Snac2 -> a smaller fediverse server apps, it even use less resources than Gotosocial, but the UI is so oldschool.
  • Microblog.pub -> a python-based single user focused server apps for tinkerers. It fully compatible with Fediverse/Mastodon with nice ui.

I tried all of them and still use both Gotosocial and and Snac2 instances daily, and they are a nice piece of software for their own use-case. Granted, all of these list above is not straightforward to use, but can you add that on advanced category. It feels unfair if it just the usual trio (Mastodon, Misskey/Calkey, Pleroma/Akkoma) that has exposure in the forum. thx.

Finally, a useful stats as total user count skewed by bot spam.
Speaking of bots, they are still inactive aren't they?

s4if,
@s4if@lemmy.world avatar

It is a bit unnerving to have bots to human ratio that high on the network. I hope they will never activated and many compromized servers get cleaned before something bad happens.

Stupid Fediverse questions

I've got an account on lemmy.world. "Lemmy" know if I have this right? I can search communities on other nodes but if I want to create a post in a remote community I've got to create an account on THAT node? Or am I missing something? Also, what is the android app everyone is liking? Jerboa is usabl, but lacking.

s4if,
@s4if@lemmy.world avatar

No, you just need to go to that community while logged in with your lemmyworld account. Usually the url will become like this: http:// lemmy[dot]world/c/community@some.instance, and once you open that, you can post normally.

what is hexbear? they suddenly appeared today with tons of user?

s4if,
@s4if@lemmy.world avatar

No, and it is better no. I want to have control and freedom on how I install and use Apps. Not to mention both of Flatpak and Snap is not storage efficient (compared to native). So for me who uses low end laptop with small ssd, native apps with their shared library is the way to go. I hope even when Flatpak and Snap goes popular, distro which stick with native apps also exist and usable.

@s4if@lemmy.world avatar

thanks it is normal now. May be ui version 1.18 also need server to have same version?

I'm still on reddit due to following subs that has very little chance to move here. If there are any hilarious poll like the one on r/pics, I will gladly help to make the result as hilarious as possible.. lol..

First Exposure of Hyprland (youtu.be)

Hi, Hyprland User out there, when and how did you get to know hyprland? I get to know Hyprland because I watched Brodie’s first video about hyprland. I think default and timeline algorithm on kbin is better than on lemmy, but with little tweak and changing several settings, I can see more posts dinamically on my homepage.

ah, this issue again. well, back to reddi... or not. :( bellow this is harsh opinion, sorry ::: spoiler spoiler I think some people is just too sensitive to be on open social media that it is better that they don't participate on it at all. And any instance that catering to that kind of people should explain it better on homepage and shouldn't federate with other instance from the start so that many open-minded people doesnt end up creating community/magazine there.
::: Just want to vent , sorry if this rubs some people in the wrong way.

selfhosted tutorial/playground page like on vuejs.org/tutorial or svelte.dev/tutorial

Hi, I am teacher. I want to make a tutorial site like here or svelte.dev/tutorial or vuejs.org/tutorial to teach basic html, css and javascript to my students. Is that kind of tutorial page custom made or part of lms-apps like moodle or something? is it possible for me to selfhost it? preferably on our school's local network?...
