This is something that really pisses me off. We don't wear leather shorts, dirndl, drink only liter glasses of beer and eat sauerkraut!

And no, German music is not yodeling. Yodeling should fall under the Geneva convention 😬

Folks! We want you! We couldn't do without you, you're our family and friends. You are what makes us get up in morning :QueerCatHeart_Trans:

Don't you dare to forget or deny this 💕

I dunno, do you agree? 🤔

Trains are not a special interest for me, but still are my by far preferred means of travel.

But the way and especially trans people fangirl/-boy about trains is so charming 💕

On Saturday I had lunch at this wonderfully located restaurant in the university area.

I forgot to mention that I had a direct view on the institute for railed vehicles. Yes, this is an engineering university, we have oddly specific institutes :blobcataww:

Railed vehicles… hehe

No, Sasha!

Railed!

Sasha, stop it!

I wonder how they do it 🤭

I normally don't make compliments on selfies from people I follow but who don't follow back.

Not because I'm bitchy, but because I feel it's not welcome.

Yeah, ok, I am bitchy in general, but not in this case 🫠

Since I now reactivated my (N)SFW account, this one here will be serious business [ties a tie]

What a weird figura etymologica … to tie a tie. If you are a tie fetishist, you also can say you're tied to tie ties.

Well, see? Serious business is going great so far 🥳

Gif of a young dark haired woman turning left and right wearing a white dress shirt, a diagonally striped grey tie and a black cardigan

sashag,
@sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

Actually I loved wearing ties back then™. But I never was forced to wear a suit and a tie. This is a big difference.

And I still am a wee bit obsessed with tie knots. I don't like the simple four-in-hand, because it looks asymmetrical. My goto knot was a "full Windsor", which I still can bind without even looking at a mirror.

I also remember having a tiny book written by two theoretical physicists, who found out, that you can apply symmetry group operations to the knot if you think of it as a three-fold rotation axis (C₃ in Schoenflies notation) and that all so called genuine knots (the ones where you can pull out the short end and the knot completely falls apart) result from legal symmetry operations.

And if you limit the number of operations ("things you do with the long end") to 5, which results in a pretty big knot, is limited to 144 (if I remember correctly).

Yes, I'm a fashion nerd, but I hate group theory 🫠

This by the way is the original certificate. Yes, it is modern and not like the pseudo historical ones I sometimes see on the net.

But it breaths the spirit of the 1980ties.

1980ties music is great, but 1980ties design is not so much 🫠

The grade by the way only is the second best possible. 1 would be the best, 2 is still OK, 3, 4 and 5 would be bad. According to a statistic from the German association of chemists at the time this is unusual. The average grades normally were: 3 for the pre diploma exam, 2 for the diploma and 1 for the PhD. The reason is that professors certainly don't want to give bad grades for their graduates, because that would mean their guidance as an advisor was bad.

The 2 in my case is due to me including the acknowledgements in the review copy. And he didn't like what I wrote about his best buddy and senior scientist. 🤷‍♀️

The university I did my PhD at was founded in the 19th century with a donation by the king of Prussia.

The original institute of chemistry was located directly next to the central building, which shows how important chemistry was (this university doesn't have a campus, buildings are spread across the city, only in recent years they started to develop a campus outside the city in addition to the historical buildings).

The building on the left is the central one with administration and main auditorium, the one on the right was the chemistry institute. It was destroyed during WWII.

One of my professors jokingly mourned the "good old times when the institute's director had a twelve room apartment in the building and was allowed to keep a cow on the institute's ground, while his first assistant was granted a goat" 😂

Career story time with aunt Sasha:

Some years ago I applied for a role as engineering manager at GitLab.

It was an unconventional start with a screening call with the director of that unit, because the HR people were not available (I don't remember why). She made the call from the customer coffee area of a car dealer, because she had to wait for her car.

This one and all the other calls and interviews went well, I guess, because at some point I got the message, that only the call with the CEO was missing and I would get an invitation very soon.

Well, I got an email. But it said, my whole application was stopped and declined. I never got a reason why.

I'm pretty sure it was yet another restructuring campaign kicking off and they stopped hiring.

This didn't leave the best impression of the company as an organization. Which is why I never asked for a reason and never applied again for a job. I'm just not interested in such a shit.

So … turns out I'll be invited to the alumni anniversary (25 and 50 year anniversary of the PhD) event next year for my 25 years.

Looked at the pictures from last year and … ugh … turns out they make the guests wear a silver (25) or golden (50) scarf and a matching mortar board.

I was so happy to not have had to wear one back then (because no event and regalia weren't a thing in the 1990ties). And now they got me 😂

sashag,
@sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

I'm already thinking about an outfit. I watched the Youtube video about the last year's event to find out, how much over the top I can go.

Because … you KNOW I will go over the top and stick out.

Maybe something that goes well with a silver scarf and mortar board 😂

This squirrel here will get a brand new dissertation certificate with her real name on it 🚀

sashag,
@sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

@ljrk @uwesinha Ah! That's an idea. But I'm sure they have examples of the original design in their files somewhere.

It's a very sober 1980ties styled design.

I'm not a fan of what many US certificates look like, but a bit more of glam would be nice.

Maybe I create a second fake one to put on the wall (next to my Zend PHP certificate from the early 2000s 😂). I envision something with a cute rainbow unicorn 🤭

sashag,
@sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

@ljrk @uwesinha Update: the person at the administration is very relieved that I would be fine with the new design, because they don't have any of the old paper left. Which means that he would have had to redraw the design to print it 🫠

Also: I haven't seen the current design, so who knows, what I will get 🥳
